Next to trying and winning, the next best thing is trying and failing.

The waitress at the cafe under the arcades still wearing a pair of glittery Valentines Day angel wings. Bob and Sophie look at her adoringly when she brings them their illicit half croissant and bowl of water. Over by the working radiator the lady with the dressing gown, pom pom slippers and hairnet nurses her second pre-breakfast glass of lager and says '' that's funny, that's funny " each time the waitress passes by.

It's wet. Great dollops of rain falling from a slate grey sky. Scottish weather  but warmer and brighter. A few brave souls out and about in the market. The first of the seasons daffodils on sale. Shopping completed a sodden Bob and ever so slightly less sodden Sophie are lifted into the back of the car to dry out. Overnight they've once again slept for ten hours solid. The little darlings batteries are fully charged and  ready to go.

In the bakers a sign has appeared " En reaction aux mots 'gateau au chocolat' les Americains pensent 'culpabilitie' les Francais 'anniversaire'. Roughly translated - '' When hearing the words 'chocolate cake ' Americans think of guilt, the French of birthdays ".

We had a rainy day, today....but we didn't go out. We don't like getting our backs wet.

Are those really Valentine's wings, we assume Cupid, or recycled Christmas wings?

And when I hear the words "chocolate cake" I think "Great, can I have some?!"

What do you think Bob & Sophie think...?

I had to laugh at the quote about the chocolate cake--It's true you know, but I also think, 'yes please!'

So nice to know that the "tradition" of an illicit half croissant and bowl of water continues on....

PS I would think "Where's my fork" ;)

Doesn't Sophie need a pair of those angel wings?

So, the little angels are served their half croissant by a bigger angel. Perfect!

Angels. That must have been the word we were looking for.

Some bold wallpaper in the cafe, I hardly noticed the wings.

The reason for US guilt is probably portion size and that it is unlikely an American will walk to the birthday party.

The angel wings are perfect for the waitress...she is just as I imagined....with a kind face...showing love to Bob and Sophie every day with their croissant pieces.
