Bastille Day.

As we return from the morning croissant run the farmer lets the cows out of the field and onto the lane. Bob and Sophie watch the cows heading towards the car. They make it quite plain that a threat of biblical proportions is about to engulf us all.

The mayor has been up early hanging out the flags for Bastille Day. He's in a better mood. The adolescent with the motorbike and the raging hormones has gone off to stay with his grandparents for a month. '' Where do they live ? '' I ask. 'Devils Island ' comes the wry response. Never let it be said the French don't have a sense of humour.

The adolescents little brother has also gone. The little brother is the tike that drives the PONs wild by rattling a stick against the gates on his way to school. He has more recently taken to ringing the bell. May the two of them enjoy a long summer break.

'Lamb' has lost that pristine new toy look . From the heavily gummed fur you can surmise it's become part of the family. Sophie and 'Lamb' remain inseparable.

Bob shows interest in 'Lamb' but is told by his sister that it is 'her' toy. She does this in a full on 'diva' way. Sophie is told not to be so bad tempered. She disappears upstairs with the disputed toy. She spends a large part of the morning under a bed alternately dozing and gnawing.

Long suffering Bob settles down at the front door. While his sister enjoys herself he has work to do. Sheep may arrive at any moment.

So starts a Bastille Day in deepest, deepest France profonde.

Should Bob be more concerned about stray cattle arriving?

Grandparents deserve medals.

Sophie really knows how to sulk, doesn't she ! Poor Bob, not so much as a sniff at Lamb. Perhaps he should have his own - then he can practise herding?

This seems to be the tactic of village mayors across France--send the delinquents off to other family. We had a rash of break-ins--including the school, from which a bunch of electronics were stolen, and some homes. The culprit had bragged about it and had been nearly caught, but you need to catch them red-handed for it to stick. Of course, he was an angel, misunderstood and completely innocent, the family said. But eventually, they sent him to relatives near Paris, and there hasn't been an incident since. Amazing coincidence.

Grandparents run the gamut from grossly indulgent to iron-fisted. Let's hope for the latter.
Maybe Bob would like his own "lamb".

Reading blogs this evening, and yours has come up on my dashboard. I started my day with your blog, and end it here as well. All evening I've been watching the news from France. I am shocked by tonight's attack and send my sympathy and prayers for all in France.

Shocked and horrified as well. Sending best thoughts, prayers for all in France and in the world.

Shock is right.

Seems the strategy is clear. Generate mistrust between French citizens of Arab and non-Arab origin. Where this leads us heaven only knows.

Not again - said resignedly.

Can't believe it. So many children.
