One determined girl.

Bob will soon have a major haircut. He is starting to look like the classic shaggy dog. This morning the family fellow is modelling his 'spikey' look.

Down to the little market town for croissants and a baguette. On our way back to the car we stop to study the primary school children's lunch menu. The children's lunch menu is a major talking point in all French towns and villages. The benefits of  a varied diet inculcated from an early age. Today, the under 8's are getting green salad with their sauteed chicken. This would probably not rank high on the wish list of Anglo-Saxon under 8's.

The male PON is allowed out of the back of the car to run down the hill to the stream. He makes it half way to the little white house then retraces his steps.

Sophie is now walking all the way round the garden unaided. The muscles in those little legs starting to regain strength. The secret is to walk her when Bob is in the kitchen. With her brother out of sight there are no sudden guarding 'emergencies' to make her charge off to the gate. Today , for the first time in months, she skips with delight. We are feeling hopeful. She is one determined girl.

The computer issue is becoming a saga.  'The Font' receives no less than nine e-mails saying that the matter is in hand. Interestingly, no date is set to come and repair/remove/replace the malfunctioning desktop which remains gloriously disassembled. The e-mails come in a variety of languages alongside the multiple French and English versions. The Portuguese and Greek ones leave us bemused. We can only assume the call centre staff in Bangalore are uncertain as to our nationality and have decided to cover all the bases.

A quiet day but one that the PONs approach with a sense of undiminished wonder. For them there is no such thing as a quiet day. Theirs is a world of high adventure.

This writer turns the English language into a thing of lyrical grace :

Somehow school dinners sound more appetizing when written in French!
Good to hear of dear Sophie's continued improvement.

We have been to restaurants that haven't had such an interesting menu.
Does Bob's haircut come with the dreaded B-A-T-H? Remember, Sophie, no chasing squirrels - yet !

So much for fish on Friday!

When I saw the title, I thought, Uh-oh. But it's all good news.
I am surprised the menu has fish on Monday, not Friday. Our village school always serves fish on Fridays.

Yes, all good news. 2017 is getting off to a good start - both PONs are on the mend.

Indeed.

A dreaded immersion is called for. Shagy and pongy.

And probably more attractively served than their UK counterparts.

I love picturing Bob racing down the hill and Sophie skipping.

Helen MacDonald is indeed a writer of lyrical grace. Her book, H is For Hawk, was a complete joy.
Hooray for Sophie!
We never doubted for a moment that she'd return to fine fettle.
xx
