A record of those unimportant little things that are too important to be forgotten.

As knowledge increases, wonder deepens.
It pours all day. The clouds sticking to the top of the ridge like a barnacle. Bob and Sophie are kept indoors and thoroughly groomed. By mid-morning they're stir crazy. Within ten minutes of being let out into the garden they look like the sort of dogs you see on animal welfare commercials.
The garlic sculptures exhibition is humming. The downpour has brought the entertainment seeking locals out in force. We arrive just in time for the prize giving . First prize goes to two three foot high ' folkloric' dolls clothed entirely in garlic. '' Strands for the hair, skins for the clothes - all parts are used " the judge helpfully informs us. Second prize goes to a garlic Arc de Triomphe. Third prize to a model of five small garlic dolls in a playground. The sculpture is on the sinister side of eerie. As Edgar Allan Poe might have said " On the night of a full moon , if you listen carefully , they say you can hear the garlic children laughing ".
We, too, found the garlic children strange.....

Picture no. 3. A garlic Arc de Triomphe admired by a man in a beret and a striped shirt and an elegantly clad lady. You couldn't make it up!
ReplyDeleteThe garlic playground children are certainly rather disturbing.
ReplyDeleteAnd if the two PONs were in a commercial I would buy whatever they were selling!
There is France, France profonde, and then deepest, deepest France profonde where people really do wear berets, make model Arc de Triomphes out of garlic, and drink absinthe before breakfast.
DeleteI think your Edgar Allen Poe inspired words should be added to the playground sculpture, they are very perfect. Were there any animal entries?
ReplyDeleteNo but there was a goat judging competition behind the beer tent.
Deletedid you place that grass on his nose... just so?
ReplyDeleteadorable puppies. wet and messy post grooming!
Wow it must have taken quite a while to make the garlic sculptures, not forgetting patience of course. Very interesting sculptures.
ReplyDeleteYour first paragraph belongs in a published book somewhere. Your words painted the picture really well.
I still can't get my head around garlic sculpturing, although that Arc de Triomphe does look impressive. How smelly is it ?
ReplyDeleteIs Bob practicing his new skill of balancing things on his nose, start with grass then build up to biscuits ! He does look so cute
i love your blog.

Thank you for my Monday morning giggle! Personally, I like the Arc de Triomphe better, but I completely agree that the "Children of the Garlic Field" are creepy as heck.
ReplyDeleteWow.
ReplyDeleteThat's all I got.
Wow.
The folkloric prize-winners are quite clever, and must have taken a lot of skill to make. Also the Arc. But the garlic children, eeuww. *shudders*
ReplyDeleteI like the grass on the nose.
ReplyDeleteI'm always amazed at what creative people use to make their sculptures. Love garlic but wouldn't sculpt with it (OK, don't sculpt at all).
ReplyDeleteThe two edged sword: stir crazy PONs or filthy PONs....hmm...
And I thought someone pooped in the house yesterday; it was Shiloh having rolled in the pony manure. A weekend of smells.
Love your adventures, - both human and doggies, - but I always watch eagerly for your words of wisdom. Never too late to learn and absorb!
ReplyDeleteI'm not convinced that there is beauty in a garlic sculpture...
