Yodeling.


Sunday morning in deepest France profonde. A time for the villagers to sleep in. Sophie doesn't recognize the term 'sleeping in' so we have the village, the lane and the ox track to ourselves. On the news this morning a story that France and Britain are proposing a safe zone in Kabul for those Afghans who worked for them over the last twenty years but couldn't get out. This could be an improvement over the 'We can't evacuate you but we'll put your name on a list' strategy that's been in place until now.


Goats, donkeys, geese all greeted. A charge through the rapidly wilting sunflowers and then it's off to the bakers patio for a coffee and a croissant. Sophie waits with some semblance of patience while I order. While waiting for the waitress Sophie whiles away the time by emitting a variety of back of the throat yodeling noises. Thankfully, there is only one other customer and she seems oblivious to the sounds emanating from my shaggy companion.


Todays croissant a 7.8/10.

    We saw a tv programme this week about a factory making croissants (in France) and the only useful info to come out of it (because we wouldn't dream of buying long life croissants in a supermarket) was that apparently straight croissants are the butter ones, and crescent shaped ones are made with vegetable oil. Could that possibly be true? Vegetable shortening croissants? Sophie's hair-do in the first photo looks like she had a great party last night.

      Angus may be appalled to learn that Aberdeen butteries (or rowies) are now made with rapeseed and palm oil. Sustainable palm oil, but the butter is now absent from butteries.

      One would like to think that it's an exercise in public health concern but the use of palm oil contradicts the benefits of rapeseed... and I have no doubt at all it is because it cuts costs for the manufacture! YAM xx

    Well, having a little yodel to yourself never did any harm, though some may give pause when they see the hair-do!
    The croissant looked good and no doubt tasted much better than the mini ones my friend brings as a thank-you for using my pool and my providing coffee, honey, etc., for breakfast. She buys them in our local Lidl on Tuesday morning (10 for 1 euro!) and keeps them until our Saturday meet up. There's no way you can rescue a very stale croissant - even Inca isn't impressed!

    With all the strikingly bad news, it is good to hear of a possible safe zone and a tasty, if not perfect, croissant. Sophie's fur has a life of its own.

    I got some free VEGAN croissants the other day - then it dawned on me and I looked at the ingredients - of course there is no butter! Palm oil, canola oil and a bunch of ingredients I'm not interested in eating! And vegans think they are eating healthier!
