We have to look up '8647' to see what all the fuss is about. Do you know what it means ?
'Ah ! The romance of Scotland ' says 'The Font' flinging wide the hotel bedroom curtains to reveal a scene of urban dowdiness. Angus has booked the room at the last minute so beggars can't exactly be choosers. The hotel is full of a huge Chinese tour group all of whom are wearing identical red jackets. There must be three hundred of them - all 20 something males. They stand in the lobby marveling at the exoticism of Scotland and the Scots. Nothing, it would seem, has prepared them for the Edinburgh accents at check-in.
Outside the station a memorial to the locals who fell during the Great War. I'm guessing from the sheer size of the monument that there must have been a 'Pals' batallion - or three - from here. Sending off youngsters from the same schools and neighbourhoods seemed like a good idea at the time but after the scything at the Somme in 1916 the downsides were quickly recognized.
The train on time but busy. Every seat taken. From the fact the entire population of Melbourne seems to be onboard I can only assume it's some sort of Australian holiday. They all order bacon rolls from the catering cart for breakfast apart from one lady who orders a lamb curry which seems a brave thing to do at this hour of the morning.

ReplyDeleteMarshmallow test??? It reads like a Pavlovian experiment...cruel and unusual punishment. They'd've had trouble with me. Can't stand the things and couldn't even as a kid.
I think one can travel anywhere in the world and pretty much this sort of view from a hotel room! YAM xx
As I recall, that is a memorial paid for by Hearts, and remembers its players and supporters who fell. So very sad.
ReplyDeleteA comment on yesterday. I requested advice.
ReplyDeleteThe Kylesku is lovely, but it’s not a patch on its near neighbour, the Eddrachilles, a dog loving hotel with fantastic service, great food and superb views. If a tad pricey.
Thank you. That's most useful advice.
DeleteAm tickled to read that the area we lived near for 30 years is 'up and coming'. It's been up and coming for 30 years - perhaps it'll get there one day. At first I thought your restaurant was the Little Chartroom, but the chairs look different. I'd love to know the street name at least of your restaurant, so that we can give it a try on our next expedition south.
ReplyDeleteThe picture is of Ardfern the bar next door. The restaurant is the Chartroom which we came away thinking was Edinburghs version of Glasgows Unalome ( another favourite ).
DeleteI agree with Yam, the marshmallow test is creepy. The whole "8647" thing yesterday brought back childhood memories of deciding to "86" something. It's a weird expression if I think about it, so I looked up the derivation and it seems it started a as barroom code. If something is "86," it is out of stock, and the term was also used to cut off a customer who had too much to drink. We kids just used it to refer to getting rid of something. I grew up in a town with a substantial Mafiosa presence, so we were aware that "86ing" something was different from "offing" someone. I read that the Secret Service is going to interview James Comey about this, but I don't think they'll have much luck arguing that he was calling for the assassination of "47".
ReplyDeleteWe have all had stranger views from hotel rooms.
ReplyDeleteI’m so glad you’ve returned with thoughts and pictures of so many small things we encounter and also the thought-provoking links. James Comey has grown weird, in my opinion. What grown man posts a picture of himself jumping in the air with all four appendages extended?!? Quite childish, I’d say.
ReplyDeleteJust reading today's Daily Telegraph. An article by Jane Archer '10 Wonderful ways to discover Japan from the sea'. If you don't take the newspaper I think you can still Google it on line. Thought it might be of interest! Many thanks to you for my favourite blog to start each day! Angela
ReplyDeleteto "86" someone is slang for ejecting someone from a bar, restaurant, casino, etc., because of obnoxious behavior, or cheating.
ReplyDelete86 means “to throw out” or “get rid of”, while 47 is used to refer to President Trump, given he is the 47th president....
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you have found a great restaurant, but I feel very old looking at their wine list. I'm used to seeing wine listed by country, or at least by grape variety and style, but not country then ranked by price from low to high. However, it sounds like you navigated the wine menu well for the Font to enjoy a second glass.
ReplyDelete86 47 has been seen on protest signs for months. They are just hassling Comey because they can. 86 is a common phrase that was also used about Biden if memory serves. Just another day (century) in paradise.
