We never check bags. This time we did, just as two French airport unions decide to go on strike. Net result ? Our luggage is somewhere else.
Mid afternoon. A phone call from the airport to say some bags have arrived. They may be ours . 'The font' goes to Toulouse to pick them up. The bags are a different shape and colour to the missing items. There's also more of them. Seven in total - we've mislaid two. The airport staff seem indifferent to these anomalies. In the evening an e-mail with a fresh complication. The IT system that tracks lost bags at Heathrow has 'broken down'.
Bob and Sophie remain resolutely oblivious to the vagaries of French work practices or software glitches. They start their day with enthusiasm and end it with their enthusiasm undimmed. At sunset Sophie can be found in the courtyard listening to the music that dogs can hear and humans can't. Bob chases blackbirds.
We never check bags either. Thanks for reminding me why.

ReplyDeleteLike Bob and Sophie I shall remain optimistic, but I wonder how come the airport rep couldn't send a photo so you could identify the bags without the Font wasting a trip to the airport.
Those French airline/airport workers seem to strike at the drop of a hat...what is the problem now?
Take some time out to sit in the garden with Sophie and listen to "the music" and have a nice day.
Strange that the two week strikes coincide with wonderful weather and the Wolrd Cup. Or is that just cynicism ?
DeleteCynical is appropriate, I think. We rarely check bags and when we do it is hold our breath time until we see them emerging from the carousel at our destination.

ReplyDeleteReturning from my last trip to NYC, my case made a side trip to Athens, Greece. It was then was delivered to my house sometime in the middle of the night with my clothes bulging from two large gaping holes covered with a

P.S. Only a few years before, a distant cousin and her spouse's cases were sent to Athens. What is it with

I read last week "Cramming clothes into carry-on bags may not appeal to travelers in Europe this summer, but the alternative could be worse; checked luggage is nearly three times more likely to arrive late in Europe than in the U.S" (http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/06/18/us-europe-airlines-idUSKBN0ET1YH20140618 ) so you might want to revert to not checking bags - then again the odds are only 9 in 1000 it is your bag that gets lost in transit in Europe!
