The art of conversation

It's busier than usual in the supermarket. Canny shoppers are out and about before the rain sets in. The lady who oversees the supermarkets scan and pay machines wanders over for a wee chat . " Have you noticed that people never take the first paper on the racks. They always go for the one behind ". This is something I'd never thought of before. A few moments observation and her insight proves to be true. I can think of no good reason why this should be the case.

Elder sister stops by the last wee house before Denmark for a start of day treat. Today it's a Grissini. Her younger sister is still asleep by the AGA safely away from the wind that is picking up strength by the hour. It seems the Jet Stream is blowing at lower altitudes today and is about to hit Scotland with winds of 80 mph .

Over breakfast we discuss the fact that Angus has found a co-joined strawberry in the punnet he bought from the farm by the bridge. I'll leave it to you to judge whether this is a sign that the familial art of conversation has died a death or is alive and kicking.

As one who quite often reaches for product at the back of the shelf, rather than the front, (and if I bought paper/mags might also do so) I can tell you it is because when paying money, one wants an item that has been least handled. The chances are that the paper on top has been held by many... or the fruit and veg on top/front has been picked (and breathed) over by many dozens... YAM xx

I must be the exception on the paper front. Although I very rarely buy a paper nowadays

Puppy sleeping in late when there are Grissinis to be had?!

The top paper frequently has marks from the bundling cord or wire. The front bottles on the shelf usually have an expiration date that is fast approaching. Puppy will be sorry he opted for a late rise this morning!

Hoping your rainstorm treats you kindly.

Thank you for the jury duty in Georgia piece, which was somehow very reassuring. I usually take the front newspaper in the rack without any thought - no consequences so far.

I never take the top newspaper either! I also feel obliged to tidy the pile after other people pull them out willynilly.

I always take the third or fourth paper in, as I'm a weirdo who doesn't like the thought of people touching my newspaper. :)
