Christmas song # 19

Monday morning and the beach is busy with dog walkers. Most of the folks up and about at sunrise are locals but the first Airbnbers are starting to appear. These are easy to spot. Their dogs look at two miles of empty sand and go wild. Absolutely ' I has died and gone to heaven' wild.

The cheese shop will soon be busy. We stop off for some Stilton. The guy behind the counter has made an early start on making up cheese plates. I wonder if he will be looking so composed by the time he shuts up shop this evening ?

There are parking spaces aplenty. What luxury ! It's difficult to explain what it's like to live in a town that's always full  to the brim to youngsters or golfers and then almost overnight becomes deserted.

We pick up the Christmas garland for the courtyard gate. The front door wreath will be ready tonight. The florist has had over 250 orders. She also tells us that in the summer she gets a thousand orders for graduation bouquets. The demand is spread over four days but getting it right is still an organizational nightmare.

The arrival of the Christmas season means the farm shops crisp offering ups its game. Duck in plum sauce replaces the more humdrum cheese and onion.

Christmas song #19 .There's nothing on earth quite like the wonders of a Christmas 'spectacular' on German television . Dry ice is always a prominent feature.  Although unknown to me the gentleman and three ladies are presumably 'big' tv celebrities north of the Alps :https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z5suXifRlVs&list=RDz5suXifRlVs&start_radio=1

Blast from the past. How the role of government has changed. A great tear jerker version of The Little Drummer Boy from simpler times. You couldn't imagine a political scene like this on tv today...or could you ? " We're still in NATO right ? " a great line :https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C_BRd1fegBw&list=RDC_BRd1fegBw&start_radio=1

Not the most festive of links but one that I have recently started to check once a week. Is this wise ?:https://thebulletin.org/2025/12/threatening-ncar-trump-administration-seeks-to-extinguish-a-beacon-of-climate-science/

This guy climbing a skyscraper will be broadcast live on Netflix in the New Year  :https://x.com/AlexHonnold/status/2002807370452509170

The West Wing clip is so telling. I’m off to wash my face of tear tracks

The wreath is lovely, and looks like it might smell good, too!

The article on NCAR gave me flashbacks to early this century, when I was part of founding the STaR (Science, Technology and Research) Party to fight an election in defence of the CSIRO - Australia's premier research facility (from which arose Wi-Fi and Polymer banknotes among so much more, as well as playing its part in climate science). The Keating government was seeking to break it up (resulting in some internal disruption that might have been just as destructive). Long story short, it's still going and still battling for funding. Meanwhile that brief single-term brush with political life left its marks... YAM xx

I've never seen West Wing, but this makes me think I should watch. I loved the Christmas song, I was actually waiting for this years German dry ice smoke entry. I don't think I will watch the guy climbing Taipei 101, but I do wonder whether the "in and out" shape of the building makes it easier or harder. In general, I think one of the challenges for this year and next is figuring out to what extent we "must," as responsible people, follow the news and what news we should follow. We need to keep our strength up and our wits about us.

The tears have a life of their own watching the Little Drummer Boy clip. No matter how many times I've seen it. And I'd like you all.to know, after being.dogless for about a year since our Joey left us, we have rehomed an 11-year old wire-hairrd fox terrier named JJ Griffin or Griff. Jake would approve and so would Gail.

Thank you for the West Wing clip, I fear we will never return to the way things were then, albeit fictional, and we will be forever the worse for the loss.

I agree with YAM - the wreath is beautiful! And the West Wing! I saw a YouTube clip of Martin Sheen rewatching a particularly strong scene with an interviewer and HE teared up! He said he didn't remember the scene but was visibly touched.

I agree with all the above friends. Griff is this year's joyful blessing, I am so happy for you both. News has been rough to digest for some time now, but I force myself to keep up as a "good" citizen. Along with the bad I look for signs of hope and try to remember that we can tear down or rebuild anything to set things right. Merry Christmas.

Welcome JJ Griffin, sir. You have landed well.

Your dog-walking-at-sunrise photo is sublime. Thank you! And blessings to Griff, on his soft and generous landing, may he have many peaceful and happy days with Jake and Joey's family.
