Rainy Yokohama

No pictures this morning. The cable that enables photos to be downloaded from the phone to the laptop has been packed away ‘safely’ and can’t be found. A new one will be bought when the stores open . The second we get home you can be sure the original cable will magically reappear.

The flight out took 14 hours . BA had a brand new Airbus on the route which had that unmistakable but transitory smell that you only find in new cars and aircraft.  Everyone likes to criticise BA but the service was smooth and efficient despite every seat being taken by exuberantly happy families on their way to view Cherry Blossom season. It was not a smooth flight and became ‘lively’ over northern China. Seemingly all Beijings airports were experiencing the strongest winds in half a century . 41,000 feet above things were also turbulent. We both watched Conclave which was good until the overly sentimental and improbable ending.

Immigration at Haneda was a nightmare. There was a queue with at least a thousand people in it. Seems every flight from Europe is operating full . Thankfully, after twenty minutes, a young woman in a day glo jacket arrived took one look at Angus and announced ‘You very old’. Ordinarily a greeting like this would not be well received but on this occasion it proved to be our ticket to a ‘priority’ line that saved us another hour of standing amid jet lagged  back packers.

No news from the organisers of the trip regarding the whereabouts of our ‘luxury motor vessel’ which is somewhere en route from Borneo with its collection of Palo Altoans and assorted guest lecturers. A review of the passenger list shows that there are five ‘Bob and Laura’s’ onboard which considering the boat can only hold 36 must be some form of record.

Grateful for word of your safe arrival. Slightly unnerved at the impending passenger manifesto... shades of Stepford flashed through my brain. Rest well... YAM xx

I hope you do get to see the cherry blossoms. They are very hard to time, so many people (my parents included) travel to see them only to be disappointed. If you have any extra time in Yokohama, you might try to visit Sankeien, a very beautiful garden and probably a relaxing way to recover from jet lag. https://www.yokohamajapan.com/things-to-do/detail.php?bbid=87 Kamakura would be a little farther away but still close and very beautiful - a former capital.

I enjoyed Conclave, but I'd guessed the ending which was therefore a bit of a let down. And, honestly, it'd take more than that to bring the RC church out of its dreadful attitude towards gays, (or women, or .... add your own! ) I'm so glad you "Looked very old" if it got you out of that Immigration hall - you'll look much better after a decent sleep, won't you.

So glad to hear that you've arrived safely and were helped to avoid the chaotic crowds at immigration. Sometimes it pays to look careworn!

Sometimes it's good to look less than our best!

Rest well. I bet the Font had a silent giggle at that greeting.

Great to hear from you. We flew BA from Heathrow to Dulles last May and the service was wonderful.

Happy that you’ve arrived safely for your adventure. Delighted to see a post this morning, albeit ever so small. A coincidence that five Bob and Laura teams are traveling together?

Fingers crossed that all will go smoothly. "You very old" perceptions (I should say misperceptions) may work to our advantage. Go for it.

Oh, you not so old.

Happy to hear that you landed safely and got “whisked’ through immigration. Don’t take the “you very old” personally. The Japanese have so much respect for their elders and treat them honourably. They also seem to do this if they think one might be pregnant, or accompanied by small children, or even people with a hint of grey hair but perhaps Lisa could comment further. Hope everything goes according to plan from here on.

Couldn't help a giggle at "looked very old" but well done you! I'll forgo the moisturiser next time I am flying long haul.
Looking forward to the Bob and Laura report(s)!

Already missing your daily updates, but hope you are having a good time.

I, too, expected the ending of Conclave. I guess it was a bit soppy, but we live in hope.

At least there are fewer names to remember - which can be a "challenge" as one gets older. And if all else fails say "Bob" or "Laura" and there will be a high probability you are right. Thank you for continuing to post. And I look forward to the photos. I have more leads than I know what to do with and they never seem to be the right one.
