Another cold morning made colder by the northerly wind. Think -10 and you're on the right track. The weather forecast informs us that visibility this morning is 70 kilometers and air pollution a healthy 1 out of 10. Snow is forecast for later this morning but there's no sign of clouds in any direction. It's too cold for Archie the arthritic labrador to be out. We great his sister and his owner before cutting our walk short and heading back to the warmth of the car.
The town is now at peak quiet and the streets empty. The holidaymakers have gone and the students are yet to arrive. We go for a pre-dinner drink in the fancy cocktail bar. We're the only customers and the barman serves us and then quickly returns to studying his year two textbook on cardiovascular medicine. He avoids small talk. Many of the shops and restaurants will stay closed until the new semester starts towards the end of the month.
The farmers eldest son hard at work in the barn. He's singing ' Is this the way to Amarillo ? ' at the top of his voice. Even the most charitable would say the lad is not a natural musician. This morning he's shifting potato crates with the fork lift :https://youtu.be/myBbOIdwUGo?list=RDmyBbOIdwUGo&t=101 . He has two more weeks of holiday before the university in Edinburgh starts up again. His younger sibling starts back at school today. For the ( male ) teenage villagers the World Cup remains the dominant topic of conversation.

What is the connection between "is this the way to Amarillo" and the Scottish football team? As is why do they chose to sing it. I know that "Sweet Caroline" seems to be a prefered song at sporting events as well as concerts.
Beats me. I can only assume the inclusion of the song in the fans repertoire is a signal of their suave international sophistication .

Yup, the big chill is definitely on. One wonders if that hotel is going to become a tartan palace... YAM xx
I send mini crackers to Idaho every year - they're not really a thing in the USA. Also florentines, which my sister-in-law loves and which seem impossible to find over there.
"Superlative Transformation" is rather over the top, must be from California (and I like California.)
My ancestors left Scotland in the 1600-1700 era, but when I hear things like that version of Auld Lang Syne, I realize that I am Scottish to my soul.

We certainly have Christmas crackers here in Canada (says the Hardy Canuck, who woke up this morning to a temperature of -13C and snow) although there were none to be found in local stores this past December for some unknown reason. The last time that happened was during one of the pandemic winters when supply chains were in chaos. Even though the jokes are always dumb and the prizes generally junk, they are still an indelible part of our Christmas and we missed not having them this year.
I enjoyed the Norway posts. I once had a client who went up against a Norwegian entity and the Norwegians impressed me with their fighting spirit (as we would say in Japan). I since always been interested in visiting there.
