Thank you all for our comments on the shingles vaccine. I shall go along to the Health Centre on Monday for my jab.
The storm that has been pounding us for the last three days and nights relents. This morning we're greeted by blue skies and some weak sunshine but more ( possibly much more ) heavy rain is expected by mid-morning. The town dog walkers are out in force enjoying this wind and rain free interlude.
Overnight the last of the students have returned and parking has become decidedly more difficult. The secret is to secure a spot before the two minutes to nine lecture rush takes place. With the students back there's also an influx of ageing cars. One of the neighbouring rugby lads has a red Golf that has a rear seat that's home to half a dozen rugby balls , crumpled medical text books and a substantial number of crushed lager cans. The car looks as though a Big Foot is living in it.

Gosh, that final video from the American ex-marine was eloquent! I don't think the Don is getting his vote, but his reasoning was thought provoking.

...be prepared that the calendars may now arrive en masse again next year... YAM xx
Angus - Loved that last clip. Goes to show you can always rely on a US Marine to speak honestly and from the heart . Marcie in Chicago XXX
Wish my Congressman was as lucid and clear as this guy !
Arizona is a beautiful state. We lived in LA from 1990-92 and then moved back to Tokyo. I thought that my husband should not be the only Japanese who came so close but did not see the Grand Canyon, so our last US trip was to Arizona. Growing up in Japan, he loved American Western movies, so we started with a pilgrimage to Tombstone (Wyatt Earp, OK Corral), and then stayed in Tucson for a few days before heading north through Sedona and Flagstaff (which looked a lot like upstate New York to my surprise). We did stop at the Grand Canyon, but it was the rest of the trip that really stayed with us. I am happy if people outside the US see that last clip you linked. The piece by the professor at Kings was interesting, but reading all the critiques on the responses from Europe (especially from American commentators), I keep wondering what sort of psychological/strategic advice the European leaders are receiving on how to deal with this man. It's not easy - we learned this week that he may have raised tariffs on Switzerland simply because the former president "rubbed him the wrong way" - so I expect there is a lot of thought going into this.
My grandparents lived in Illinois and after their retirement they spent their winters in Arizona. They sent Beautiful Arizona calendars to us and I loved looking at all the desert scenes.
We do have cheese slicers in the US but in all my years, I've rarely seen one put to use. I do remember that if my mother pulled out the slicer, we were about to have company she wished to impress. Mine sits way back in the utensil drawer, forgotten and unappreciated. Today I shall pull it out, shine it up and cut some cheese...maybe even invite the neighbors over. Its currently minus 15 degrees below zero, so if they're wise, they'll take a pass. Up to a foot of snow has been predicted for us on Sunday. St Andrews seems downright balmy to me today.
Ah youth, it has been a long time since the back seat of my car looked like a toxic waste dump, but I can remember when it did. And I agree the US has cheese slicers like that, they are not often used, but they are here. He is young and has led a sheltered life.
A late comment on the Shingles vaccine...I had a very mild case of shingles before the first vaccine was available. I received the first and when the newest vaccine was available I also had it. I've never had much of a reaction to any vaccine until the second injection of the newest vaccine. For whatever reason, the injection itself was the worse I've ever experienced and the vaccine laid me low for some 36 hours. However, even if I had known it beforehand, I would have taken it. Shingles can recur multiple times and can be life threatening for some people.
