We are back.
The trip was 'eventful'.
Neither us knew that Funchal airport is frequently closed due to treacherous winds.
This video may hint at our three unsuccessful white knuckle attempts to fly from Lisbon to Madeira with Air Portugal. Yes, the locals do scream when it looks as if the plane is about to flip over and plummet into the sea. After three flights and three aborted landings we opted to head somewhere else :https://youtu.be/jAUAl587hL8?t=117
Having failed to land in Madeira we foolishly booked into what we were told was a country hotel south of Lisbon that was 'sublime'. It wasn't. We headed back to the big city after three nights.
Excitement in the hotels local village came in the shape of two storks nesting on top of a telephone pole. This may have been the perfect way of forgetting what was going on in the wider world.

As a Scotsman resident in Funchal, Madeira, I can sympathize! The airport here is often affected by wind gusts meaning that diversions and cancelations are not uncommon. The airport, with it's impressive runway extension on concrete pillars over the Atlantic, was built in a windy part of the island. It can be totally still in Funchal, but blowing a hooley at the airport. I am pleased that you liked Portugal. It is a rather beautiful, simple country with old fashioned values. I enjoy living here.

For reasons that confusticate, this post appeared in my reader at the same time as the next post - so yet another greeting of 'hooray, you're back!' ... and yikes. I've experienced several very scary landings so can also understand the need to retreat to the bar after! YAM xx
Oops. I read your posts in the wrong order.
Glad you are both safe, and off to Google your good hotel
I hate that AI took me straight there. And I hate your budget 😂😂
The opulent hotel decor is impressive. The nesting storks are wonderful.
