At first light there's a group of thirty or so folk standing lined up facing the sea. They're here for the scattering of the ashes of the very small and very old lady with the Westie. We used to see her wandering slowly around town, followed three paces behind by her devoted companion. For the last six months she's been in the modern ( and supposedly very good ) care home out in the new development. The presence of a number of enthusiastic labradors who are keen to participate does not make the scattering of ashes as easy as it sounds. What more joyous or magical place can there be for farewells than the beach on a calm, sunny, October morning ?
The English were once considered to be the most 'Catholic' of all nations. For those who know Rome you can still find the English College :https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/what-are-medieval-english-coins-doing-in-rome-they-could-be-rare-evidence-of-a-little-england-enclave-that-received-special-papal-privileges-180989625/

Yes, this is the first time this season I've felt 'nippy' and reached for the jumper. Sweet tribute to the old lady... YAM xx
The ashes of a dear friend were scattered at a farm this summer, the cows came over and licked some of Larry up. He would have liked that.
This issue of ashes presents a cultural divide in our family. In Japan, it is important to keep everything, and everyone, together, and families are typically interred together. I personally can't imagine anything worse than being stuck in a little (really small) tomb with my husband's ancestors for all eternity, but, to be fair, he probably can't imagine anything worse than being sprinkled in a former chrysanthemum bed as my parents were. I suspect this is an issue we will leave to our children to sort through.
My brother and I released our parents's ashes at sea, to dance forever with our galaxy, after tipping a glass of champagne overboard as a proper libation.
Then we drank the rest of the champagne.
A wonderful send off, beautifully. documented!
