The farmer by the crossroads has bought a new 4x4. This turns out to be a BYD - a brand that's made in China. " BYD stands for Build Your Dreams " the farmer informs a group of young fathers ( and their lively offspring ) who have come out to inspect it. This is the first Chinese car that anyone in the village has bought. Reactions to this new arrival are mixed. The quality of the interior is commented on positively as is the price but there's a general feeling that 'You can't beat an established brand '. Angus wonders who in the 21st century would ever use the term 'established brand ' but keeps this thought to himself. He also wonders why anyone would buy a car that's dark purple metallic but this thought is also left unvoiced.
The crowd of car appraisers have observed that a white Peugeot has spent the night parked in a field down by the shore. It's a rental car ( you can tell from the registration ) and the windows are steamed up. It's blocking the track down to the shore where the Highland cows are. Little, if anything, escapes the inhabitants of a small Scottish coastal village. Soon a tractor will be sent down to do some spraying. This will get the inhabitants of the Peugeot moving.
Today the weather is likely to be hot and heavy or an approximation of what the Scots consider hot and heavy to be.
The road outside the Royal and Ancient is empty and windswept for much of the year. Now it's alive with tourists watching the flag being raised. Some beer glasses from last night are still waiting to be collected from the tables and taken in.

It would appear that the BYD ute is the 5th most popular plug-in hybrid option for NZ farmers. BYD New Zealand says it sold 80 new vehicles on Saturday March 14 2026. Our neighbour has one.

BYD is the brand to keep an eye on in the EV market... and I've seen qutie a lot of metallic purple around, so that seems to be a thing. The bright pink Audi I saw on the road the other day was a tad more disturbing... YAM xx
There are lots of BYD cars in our area, although I haven't seen a metallic purple one yet. They are pretty nice-looking generally. As to animal communication, I am skeptical of "translation" tools, although who knows these days. For the moment, we seem to be doing OK in our household. Charlie and the parrot both understand lots of human language, and we seem to understand quite a bit of bird and dog. My daughter is in Phoenix this week, where it is expected to reach 48 degrees by Saturday. (Oh, but it's a dry heat!)
The CEO of Ford was driving a Chinese made electric car for a while, and said he was astounded by the technology. Years ago, Jeremy Clarkson made jokes that "sooner or later you will be driving a chinese car."
The billboard is delightful.
This is a fascinating glimpse into how Chinese automotive brands like BYD are becoming part of everyday car culture around the world. Seeing a BYD become the first Chinese vehicle in a small village shows how the global automotive landscape is changing, with EV and new-age manufacturers gaining recognition alongside traditional brands. As more people invest in modern vehicles, maintaining their appearance becomes an important part of ownership. PPF Coating for Car can help protect a vehicle’s paint from scratches, UV rays, road debris, and environmental elements while preserving its fresh and premium look. A great story capturing the evolution of global car ownership and changing automotive preferences!
