A heatwave down south in London. Their third this year. Up here the mercury is expected to hit (briefly) a heady 16C.
The village hall has been quiet since Scotland dropped out of the World Cup. This morning it's a hive of cheerful activity. The local teenagers are getting everything ready for the excitement of the Norway v England game. A freshly ironed white floor to ceiling 'projection' sheet is being hung from the rafters by the kitchen door. The tournament has, until very recently, been a master class in civic mindedness and good sportsmanship.
A rather fine display of orchids in a window in town.

The wood carving is awesome!
Now to keep politics out of football, and let the players simply play their best.
The statue of Master Hongyi is stunning. Quite an achievement. I wonder if there is a brisk business in re-sale of used graduation gowns. I would hope they are substantially cheaper than a new one. As for World Cup play, may the best team win.
The article from Noema was thought-provoking. I find that I tend to phrase my AI requests politely, while at the same time scolding my husband for referring to Clause as "he". More to the point, we have a sick bird here, a 29-year old cockatiel who suddenly developed painful pressure in one eye. He stopped eating because of the pain, so he's currently being hand-fed while also getting eye drops twice a day. I keep wondering how all of this seems to him, but it is working - eye pressure down to normal as of this morning - and he seems to be happy. Amazingly, our veterinary team includes an opthalmologic specialist with a Ph.D. from Michigan State. As to soccer, I was very unhappy yesterday, but today I'm thinking it turned out OK. America lost because Belgium was the better team and there is no argument that things would have been different "if". I watched Spain vs. Portugal yesterday and thought it was a good match - interesting to wake up this morning and see all the American commentators describing it as "boring," "snoozy," etc. I don't think they've quite got it yet.
