The gannets are out in force. They follow each other along the coast in ruler straight lines - a dozen or so birds at a time. These flocks keep on coming one after the other from their nest 20 miles away on a small barren volcanic outcrop in the middle of the Forth. The gannets have had a rough year with avian flu so it's good to see so many of them together. The village twitchers think the birds numbers are down 30% due to the disease. As the gannets pass the old life boat station they suddenly rear up to a height of thirty or so feet , turn and then plummet, wings sharply folded, down into the sea. There must be a huge shoal of fish here to attract so many of them. How do they pass the news on ? How do they avoid each other ? The sight of so many birds doing these impossible synchronized manoeuvres holds us spell bound. Heads lowered to dive they send plumes of water flying in every direction. Watching them we're almost happy enough to clap but don't , settling instead for a low murmur of appreciation.
'God bless the just'. A suitably Presbyterian door lintel on the cottage that used to be the weigh house.
The bakers still promoting a strawberry 'fayre'.

I love to watch Gannets on the hunt... entrancing. As for the flowers... I guess if you can't be bothered collecting your own... YAM xx
I would have loved to see the Gannets. The outrage over FIFA's plan was well-deserved, and Infantino should have seen it coming. But you are right, the nonsense going on in DC seems to have people tilting at everything except the obvious. I bought the Sunday NYT at Auchan yesterday, as the FT hadn't yet arrived - the frontpage headline was "For France, a Summer in Hell." Really, that's the best they could come up with after last week?
The NYT seems to have it in for France and even more so the UK. This has been the case for at least the last 30 years and I have always put this down to an editorial belief that Manhattan in the new Jerusalem.
A wonderful assortment of photos today as well the links. I love that you and the Font take time from your schedule to watch a flock of birds.
The cottage with the door lintel is wonderful. The pink pastries are a little off-putting.
What a fun blog to read. We often are in St Andrews in September as my husband works with a retired prof. From the university. Interesting to read about the town from your view point. We stayed there for a semester in 1985, and we’ve certainly seen huge changes as the years go by.
