Sunday morning. The BBC engineers already hard at work in chapel. There will be a live broadcast this afternoon on Radio 3 between four thirty and six thirty. The sound of a full orchestral version of O come O come Emmanuel drifts across the road towards us. We stop, entranced, by the fish restaurant and listen. How exotic the music sounds amid the street lights and parking cones of a small Scottish town. You know its advent proper when the BBC show up.

I heard the service from St Andrew's this morning - at least, the first part. Pure voices!

I think what Jabblog heard would have been the first of a whole day of concerts of Carols Around the UK, which was actually from Staffordshire. Currently, Northern Ireland is on... there will be Cambridge featured in the 90 minutes before the show moves to St Andrews at 16:30h.
Regarding the 'discuss' point: I'm not sure what Angus is concerned about. The "Scotch-Irish/Scottish" are marked in orange and cover the Appalchian regions as well as Nova Scotia quite clearly. Fair enough, we know that the Celtic culture continues to thrive in those parts.
Admittedly, there must have been a wider diaspora than that, but the 'blending' would have been wider, also, and that chart is based on how folk predominantly identify themselves. Even if they have Scottish blood in their background, it's not enough for them to be clear about their lineage. As to whether or not there would have been a revolution - probably. The political circumstances would have been much the same, I suspect. YAM xx
Reporting from "The Melting Pot" of America: I am English. Irish, Scottish and on Dad's side Italian. I am here but cannot be plugged into the map. BTW: My SIL is from Pictou NS and his Dad's accent is as Scottish as can be. Love when he rolls those RRRs!
Sounds like a magical start to the day.
I really enjoyed the last link, about France. His explanation about how to say "no" without saying "no" reminded me so much of Japan. The Tim Snyder piece was great, and I think he wrote that even before the WSJ revealed the commercial dealings behind the "peace" proposals. I also loved the dog in pink pajamas.
As someone who lives not far from High Wycombe a) no, there is no Low Wycombe and b) oh boy are they in for a disappointment when they visit him down here 😂
"You know it's advent proper when the BBC turn up" made me laugh out loud. Many thanks.
