We're off the boat and through Norwegian customs in under three minutes. The drive to the airport is traffic free and, wonder of wonders, we catch an earlier much delayed flight back to Edinburgh. The whole journey completed door to door in under six hours. You couldn't get back from Norway to St Andrews that quickly if you planned ahead.
The weather on our trip has been 'challenging'. The force 10 gales and snow followed us a thousand miles North and then followed us a thousand miles South. This morning, after two weeks of being bounced around like laundry in a spin drier we're still swaying with the motion of the boat.
Here in Scotland the weather is bright and sunny but bitterly cold. The neighbours inform us the view of the Northern Lights was wonderful. We bite our tongues.
On Tuesday night we arrange a final dinner ashore with the Arizonans . A chance to let them try a really good little restaurant and Norwegian cuisine that's not been produced in the ships galley. They photograph every course ( and pose for Selfies with Annie, Sven and Olaf the ever patient restaurant staff ), post images on instagram and call friends back at home to say that fresh halibut in Oslo isn't a bit like the product for sale in Whole Foods in Tucson. The concept of an amuse bouche is something they think is wonderful. They discover blackberry sorbet with white chocolate which causes an outbreak of delighted laughter. We discuss wine and one lady says she has some bottles of Grgich Hills Fume Blanc in her fridge. When she discovers this was the wine President Reagan served President Mitterrand at a dinner in the US embassy in Paris she gets on the phone and orders another case. She calls her daughter to do the same. We can't get it in the UK so I envy them. A chat with the wine waiter brings out a rather good Meursault which they agree is wonderful.
They all talk politics with sophistication and insight and a hint of weariness. All, bar two couples, were MAGA supporters in 2024. This time round the hike in health care premiums has disillusioned them. They make their views plain. The men, who are all veterans, are decidedly not fans of the new Secretary of War. The two ex-Marines voice opinions about him that cause their wives to tell them off in that ' You can't say that ' sort of way. They all admired - and voted for - John McCain and wonder whatever happened to Lyndsey Graham. Prostate issues are discussed alongside the ever rising price of chuck steak. There is some excitement ( mixed with trepidation ) about taking a flight back home on Scandinavian. 'The Font' reassures them that SAS is tied in with United and is 'quite safe' and that the cabin crew will speak English.
The meal flies by and ends with an enthusiastic group hug in which we are coopted. It can safely be said Arizonans are more tactile than Europeans. E-mails are swapped ( as they always are on such occasions ) and promises to keep in touch are made. Our Christmas card list has certainly expanded. They like the difference between saying Au Revoir and Adieu. We all agree this is an Au Revoir. At this point some of the gruffer men shed a few tears. It transpires that we are the first Europeans that any of them have ever had dinner with. This is a source of delight for them ... and for us. For those blog readers who had been worried about what they read in the press we can report the America of courage, honour and kindness is not only alive and well but is thriving.
Back on the boat some late night revelers have been busy.

The weather may have been decidedly chilly, but the company was not! What a wonderful dining experience the Arizonians had on the last night - thanks to you and 'The Font'.
That's Coppa's Girl - Google playing up again!
Such a delightful read and recap of your adventures. It's definitely a sign of success when new names are added to the Christmas card list. In this instance, it seems certain that many of you will stay in touch. Happy you're both home safe and sound. Enjoy your rest!

Yippee, you're back! What a wonderful final meal to have shared and been reasured of decency in life. Rest well - we need you back in form a.s.a.p! YAM xx
What a wonderful thing to do, to arrange a dinner ashore for the Arizonans. Such kindness will never be forgotten.
Welcome home.
Welcome home. Even if not exactly what you had hoped for, it sounds like a very fruitful adventure. And yes, there are still a lot of good people in the world, a lot of MAGA that are looking forward to the next election and a move to kinder, saner politics.
What a wonderful description of a memorable meal! Glad you were able to get past the Aloha shirts! Why is the North Sea red on your map? Glad you're back safely :)
In re-reading your description of your meal, I was reminded of having fresh halibut in Alaska. OMG! The absolute BEST!
As an American your account of the metamorphosis of the Arizonans is reassuring. The room will stop moving in a few days, takes a while for it to wear off.
Your description of dinner was wonderful. Thank you for being so kind to the Arizonans.
Welcome home! Your new Arizona friends sound delightful and now you will have to go visit Arizona some time. I read an article recently where a lady was moving from the U.S. to live with her English boyfriend in London. Lady has a dog. Flights with the dog were either unavailable or very expensive and she also had a lot of luggage and boxes to take with her. She booked a cruise ship from NYC to England. No problem with luggage and boxes going on board too. Pup stayed in kennels but was allowed to sit with owner on deck near kennel door. Everyone had a very relaxing one week trip.
I’m sorry the trip struck such a run of bad weather- I hope the ground stops lurching soon. Your meal with the Arizonans sounds memorable - surely someone would import that wine for you? I read of completely impossible increases in insurance costs under Trump, which will change a lot of votes, but I wouldn’t put it past him to U-turn on that … at a shame it’s not the only problem with the man!! Virginia.
Thank you for posting - it is good to hear about Americans away from the distortions of the media. A trip to remember despite (because of?) the weather.
I agree with Jim Davis. I read your description of the Arizonians to my husband. He often thinks I am being too optimistic, but even he was reassured.
A wonderful post, Angus — and such a marvellous account of your dinner with the Arizonians!
The 2020 and 2021 Grgich Hills Fumé Blanc are available in the UK (a quick Google search will find them). Perhaps you and the Font might like to buy a bottle — or even a case — to toast your new friends. You could raise your glasses in a selfie with the sea view from TWHBD behind you and send it to them at Thanksgiving, along with your warmest wishes for the holiday season and for 2026.
I look forward to reading more about your twelve days of travels once the ground finally stops moving.
