Choices.

Out of the car , over the dunes and onto the sand. Sophie is faced with her first choice of the day. Go left and chase the solitary jogger  or go right and chase the oyster catchers ? After a moments hesitation she opts for the oyster catchers.

Sophie then turns her attention to looking for desiccated herring amid the seaweed. This requires concentration and exemplary olfactory skills. It also means that we proceed at a leisurely pace despite the biting wind.

The super smart Los Angeleans are on the phone early. Brazil, Jim Jordan, the US debt ceiling and British tanks for Ukraine among this mornings talking points. They tell me that their forecasts call for historic cold temperatures in Scotland and the US East coast starting on January 20th. The weather forecast here doesn't agree with them - it expects the next two weeks to be mild and showery.  The Los Angeleans got it right the last time. I'll order some more heating oil just to be safe.

The family diva will be getting a beard trim this morning. Whiskers and sand do not make ideal bedfellows.

Not sure about this. Who knows what Sophie might say to us ? Bunny doesn't look too happy about it either:https://fluent.pet/

Talking about Jim Jordan very early in the morning sounds like going above and beyond, so I hope you get some benefit from the Angelenos' weather forecasting (although I guess that would mean that you and Sophie will be experiencing some seriously cold weather). The talking dog gizmo does not seem like good value. As we all know, dogs don't need buttons to communicate. It is possible the dogs might think this an efficient way to boss us around more effectively, but that would just mean our listening to "outside, outside, outside" and "play, play, play" all day long, perhaps with an "I'm hungry" thrown in from time to time. I think not.

Lisa - With Sophie it would be an endless loop of 'I'm hungry '.

Agree that the talking buttons would seem to be a waste of time - not to mention money! I know exactly what my dogs have been thinking over the years - I've just needed to see the look on their faces! They knew which cupboards their food and treats were kept in and could usually be found looking at the right cupboard at the right time! The latest addition is no different!
Poor Sophie - her beard gets in the way of some seriously fun rummaging in the seaweed!

The talking buttons video made me wonder how many of Bunny's choices, not filmed, are nonsensical. Somehow, I don't think my cardigan welsh corgi, or my standard poodle would bother to tell me either had "pooped." And I agree with the other comments, if you pay attention and know your dog, you'll go a long way to understanding what they are trying to communicate, or are reacting to.

Sophie might say....Where's the Jaffa cakes buddy? Forget the buttons...you know what I'm sayin'!

Bunny's videos on YouTube are pretty fun to watch, and she's a very smart dog, but I agree with other readers; I usually know what my dogs are saying and vice versa, even if they ignore me! Part of the joy of dogs is that we develop our own language with them, and each dog is different.

So, you have 10 days to order some more base layers before your cold front arrives! In California we're still experiencing the 'atmospheric river' situation. It's what used to be called 'heavy rain' when I was younger. We've gone from "The Worst Drought in 1200 Years" to "Floods, Tornados and Climbing Death Toll". No wonder everyone's anxious. We don't just have weather anymore, it's always catastrophic. It's exhausting.

Visiting Sophie and the Last Wee House Before Denmark is always a welcome respite!

We follow Bunny on Instagram. Buttons aren’t needed for Kippy, As Rottrovef said, we develop our own language with our dogs.
A dear friend often says that being a weather forecaster must be the only job where you can be wrong much of the time and not get fired.

Gail is tuning in from her holiday with a bunch of "Yankee Imperialists" in Cuba. Returning to Scotland on 20th January and hoping the super smart Los Angelenos have the weather forecast wrong this time...
