Arctic swimming.

The return of the students and their weird and wonderful ways makes writing  a daily blog much easier.

This morning the usual cast of dog walkers look on in amazement as two boys and two girls strip down to their underwear and charge across the beach into the sea. Words cannot describe how cold it is . We are both wearing six layers of clothing and still find the wind chilling. The screams as they hit the water hint that the swimmers have also been surprised by just how cold the North  Sea can be in a January cold snap. 'Daft apeths' says the South African professor with the deaf bull terrier that's as gentle as a lamb. We chuckle and agree.

On our way back to the car we stop off for a granary loaf from the bakers. Four serving ladies behind the counter this morning instead of the usual two. The place is staffed up in readiness for the students who will start showing up at eight thirty for a pre-lectures sticky bun .

At the picture palace a movie neither of us has heard of. 'Sumptuous' says the quote from the Hollywood Reporter. A statement that leaves us none the wiser.

VIP seats have been installed in the cinema. 'Enjoy the film in our VIP section' says a sign positioned, indelicately but strategically , by the cash desk. Popcorn and a glass of wine are promised. What greater heights could sophistication reach ? Such pleasures may be ephemeral if Tiger Woods buys the place and replaces the screening rooms with an ESPN sports bar and indoor golf driving range.

Back at the Last wee house before Denmark the view back down the bay to the towers of town is remarkable. The air is clear as cut crystal.

That piece by Sian MacLeod is lush (as the young people say )

I've just read a couple of blogs from the American Midwest and realised that it's positively balmy here in NE Scotland just now. A whole minus one degrees Centigrade. Nobby enjoyed the two inches of fresh snow in the park this morning.
Cheers, Gail.

Sub-zero by The Hutch today, too, and likely to remain so. Strangely, this has not translated even to frost, let alone snow. And we do have a small cabal of crazy dookers in West Bay... YAM xx

Popcorn and wine sounds a strange combination, but perhaps I'm missing something.

The local should somehow preserve the theater. The small city we lived in for a few years found a way to save the downtown cinema. https://www.kentuckytheatre.org/

How blessed you are to have the view of the bay to the towers. Always gorgeous, always changing with the weather and light.

It was sub-zero in Paris as well when my husband flew through over the weekend. I am taking my daughter up to Paris next week to see the Nutcracker and the Rothko exhibition (thank you for posting about it, Angus), so now we know to bundle up (of course, if we do, it will decide to be balmy). I don't think I want to see Priscilla even though I like many of Sofia Coppola's films, Lost in Translation in particular - Elvis was before my time and I don't really have any association with the story. On the other hand, I am a big fan of VIP movie seats that recline and theaters where wine is served as well as popcorn. I don't suppose we can expect that when we finally do get to our local cinema here.

A refreshing dip in the North Sea should clear one's head for the first day of classes! While I had to look up the word " apathy" I found it quite fitting.

I know that I am like a broken record when I keep praising your pictures! The last one of the bay is amazing showing the foreground rocks and the distant view.

Wait a minute... Is that Vermont's Ben and Jerry's...in St.Andrews? I had no idea they went across the pond. The photos today, as always, are lovely.
