Joshing

The weather forecast has been warning of Rainmaggedon but the day starts bright and warm. In the Quad two Westies observe that some rubbish has blown out of a bin. They take their heavily tartaned owner across to investigate.

By chapel a group of revelers are noisily winding down after a night of excess. For some reason they're singing ' With a little bit of luck' from My Fair Lady.  From their age - and the song -  I'm guessing they're a group of students who have just learnt that they've been accepted into post-grad courses. The traffic cone worn as a hat is a rite of passage that signals much amber nectar has been consumed. 'The Font' observes that they seem to be having fun 'joshing'. This is a word that seems strangely Edwardian .

Outside the International Relations Department a group of students in gowns. They look as if they're going to be spending the day escorting applicants around.

Down on the beach a dog owner is trying to teach his young dog basic commands. The puppy has almost got 'sit' down pat but then some oystercatchers hove into view. Why sit when you can chase ?

Back at 'The last wee house before Denmark' an oil service boat has moored in the bay. On the horizon two more can be seen steaming towards us. This is a pretty sure sign that strong winds are expected. Overnight two friends came in on BA282 from Los Angeles. The flight was as smooth as anything until UK airspace when it suddenly wasn't.

The gardeners are due any minute. We're fast moving towards that time of the year when constant darkness is replaced by constant daylight.

Every evening, prior to dinner, we open a bottle of wine and sit and watch an hours television. There was a time when we'd watch the news. Now it's the latest offering from Netflix or Amazon. We give up on 'The Man from Moscow' and start on 'Ripley'. Andrew Scott  is too old for the part ( although he does ooze dialed back  malevolence ) but the black and white photography is lushly masterful. We shall stick with it.

The most difficult place, apparently,  in France to get a table reservation. They claim to have more cheeses than any other restaurant in the world :https://www.lesgrandsbuffets.com/en/gallery/pics

In 'difficult' times old alliances are rediscovered  . Friends who share your values  are always good things to have :https://www.bfmtv.com/politique/la-france-et-le-royaume-uni-organisent-une-releve-croisee-de-leur-garde_VN-202404070056.html

They knew how to do state visits sixty years ago. A young Eisenhower appears at the 1:28 mark :https://twitter.com/Gaullisme_Fr/status/1776357846730371315

Gail is kind of relieved that the lady with the two Westies did not chose matching tartans for her coat and the dogs.
Nobby agrees, why ever would one sit still on the beach when there are oystercatchers to chase?

Bright and beyond blustery here by West Sands this morning. Was contemplating taking the 'Rolls-later' out for a walk on the strand, but am probably not ready for a sandpapering! Dook for a brekky roll it is, then...YAM xx

A very hazy sun and a biting wind down at the beach this morning - not a day for lingering. Not an oystercatcher is sight, but there were one or two people taking a very brief dip!

Ripley grows on you; we’ve enjoyed it. Over time the black and white shots become almost mesmerizing.
Thank you for your assessment of “Gentleman from Moscow.” We enjoyed the book, but have discovered it’s not on Amazon Prime here in the States, so now we don’t feel badly.
Love the Tartan cape.

Such a pretty place in the early morning light. On the list of places to see.

The photo of the two little Westie bottoms as they trot forward in matching jackets gave me my first smile this morning. The third link with Eisenhower was fun to watch but the last 30 seconds was amazing. All those bejeweled royal noggins glittering so...Wow. Currently chilling a bottle of champagne in anticipation of the solar eclipse this afternoon. Looks like we'll have clear skies here in New Hampshire.

I enjoyed the de Gaulle state visit video. I agree with Camille; the fireworks and sparkling crowns make quite a show. A different world. We're looking forward to a 37% solar eclipse on the coast of Northern California this morning with clear skies.

Stephanie - The farmer has just told us the eclipse will be visible here at 8 o'clock. It's only going to be 6% coverage so we probably won't even notice it. Up in the Hebrides coverage will be a more respectable 30% but the chances of clear skies are pretty minimal. Enjoy your 37%!

Thanks for the Amazon movie suggestions. We took a family trip to Europe when I was a kid. Can still remember the reaction of the elderly passenger on the tour bus as we passed the statue of General Foch. She noticeably gasped and said words of admiration.

Remember eating at Le Paradou, and a nice plate of cheese was left at your table, my fellow Americans certainly ate their fair share. They might do some real consumption at Les Grands Buffets. 95% here in Oklahoma City.

I'm sorry that A Gentleman in Moscow was a disappointment. I loved the book. We are in the 50% eclipse range here in LA. Happening in about an hour and a half!

Amazon has a unique movie called The Taste of Things. The first 38 minutes is an almost wordless beautifully filmed scene of three people preparing food for a special dinner. With your love of good food and fine restaurants, I thought you might like to taste this one. We were surprised at first then loved it.

99% in Toronto, with a cloud deck that miraculously broke at the last minute to reveal the darkened sun and the shining corona. Very dark, silenced birds and a-confused?- coyote running through the park8ng lot at work.
Visiting family in Narbonne, I had dinner at Les Grands Buffets last summer. The cheese menu is indeed very extensive. And delicious.

Your blog is always a treat, so ta!

For a blast from the past (1985, to be exact) I recommend the Netflix documentary "We are the World". DH and I watched it last night and enjoyed it.

Wishing y'all well! Yes, I'm from the American South!

Hugs!
