Customers.

Mid flight on the way back from Scotland the co-pilot makes one of those annoying announcements. ''Customers sat by the left hand windows might catch a glimpse of Glasgow ". Angus feels like pointing out that he is 1 ) a passenger and not a customer and 2) that he is seated by a window not 'sat' by one. Pedantry about language a further sign that I'm becoming my father.

Bathed in light the old cathedral ruins in St.Andrews are looking spectacular. What must it have looked like before the Reformation caused its sudden destruction? Off season the restaurants in the little town are busy with cheerful American and Australian golfers of a certain age enjoying the cheaper rates and September weather. In the evening Canadians and New Zealanders dine outside oblivious to the northern temperatures. Strangers chat amiably to each other about their golfing experiences, the price of beer and the quaintness of their surroundings. Once religion brought you here now it's golf. A different kind of religion.

The sky at night sparkling in that way it only does in the North.

The flowers in the street planters still in bloom.  Give it six weeks and the North Sea wind will have done for them all.

'The Font' notices that many of the old houses have the stone around their window frames painted.

This must be a Scottish tradition that we've never noticed before.

On our return we find that Sophie has managed to put on weight during her brief stay in the kennels. We dread to think how this might have happened. Blog readers will know she's a keen recycler. We've tried everything from pineapple to ' never known to fail 'chemical sprays but to no avail. Despite being a little tired she, and her brother, are in fine form.

Mlle Sophie says that she has not been overfed it is just that her staff did not exercise her as do the staff at home. Beautiful photos

Oh yes the painting of window borders is a long tradition... though I wonder if it is particular to the Eastern coast... no, it happens over here in the West too. The E and W are also much divided by the weather patterns, which you have made abundantly clear here! YAM xx

You sound homesick for Scotland!

Thank you for the glimpse of sunny St. Andrews.
Surely Sophie's recycling didn't put on that much weight in such a short time?

What splendid light. The St. Andrews photo is breathtaking.
I'm familiar with pedantry about language. In my case, I know I've become my mother.

A mental condition that only occurs on the rare occasions when it's sunny.
