1:31 am.

One of those 1:31 am moments.

Angus has dozed off in his office. Something wakes him.

He looks out into the hall. Sophie's pen is empty. The two bolts that close the door somehow opened.

No sign of the princess. A moment of panic.

She's learnt to push the door backwards and forwards, backwards and forwards with her paw. This eventually moves the bolts so that the door opens.

She then quietly drags herself along the lower hallway and turns right into the small corridor that runs to her newly turfed courtyard. She's been trying to make it out onto the soft grass when nature takes over and she can hold it in no longer. Angus gets a bucket , a mop and some disinfectant.

This makes me laugh for two reasons.

Firstly because of the sheer determination of the little thing

and

Secondly because of her fastidiousness.

When she sees me she turns on her back, wags her tail and squirms with delight.

I'll probably delete this post later but will share it with any late to bed dog owners .

What a girl. What a patient.

Gotta love her! Sophie is so full of life! She is learning how to plot and plan like a pro. Then shows what a sweet girl she is by turning on her back, wagging her tail with delight, and adoration!!!

Good for you Sophie! She is one smart dog. I can only imagine what an endurance test this will be for you.

Aw! I love you, little Sophie brave girl. I remember you saying she used to hide behind Bob when she was a puppy and thought she might be timid. She has certainly come into her own and we'd all better just stand back! No stopping her now!

A quick fix got those sliding bolts. Use the clip on a dog leash to snap the loop to the frame of the pen. If your leash clips are too small, get those small carabiner clips used for key chains. I would worry she re-injure herself going freestyle walkabout. Maybe you should put a bell on her?

Hi Angus! Don't delete this post. It's honest, and tells it just like it is when you have a dog that is recovering from a major surgery. Behind the scenes, we also had a similar experience. And I'll tell you first, we've had a bit of a setback with Max. Another surgery may be on the horizon for him as well. Good Night Angus -- We both need our rest!

This couldn't be more real. Please don't delete the post. I agree with Kim and Tammy. It's a good story and shows so much of Sophie's character. She's a lovely girl.

Bless her cotton socks - So determined not to be a burden.
It may be a long hard road ahead but these little occurrences lighten the load somewhat.
Wish we could help with the physical duties Angus we're all here with you in every other way.

Darling Sophie. Makes me quite tearful and very impressed. Her nurse will have to toilet her more regularly.... What a girl!

Most inspiring story of the day! Did not take her long to figure out her new routine and take care of business on her own.

Dogs are very resilient. And you have one heck of a very tough girl there. Its amazing that she did not want to bother you... and worked out her own escape plan. Smart cookie.

She's trying her best to be a good girl. Isn't she splendid! An old cat lady and her cats salute you, dear one.

Just a quick thank you for all your advice. You were absolutely right that if she finds a place that ' rings the right bells ' the rest will follow naturally. The relief, of various sorts, this brings to us and her is enormous.

There is a book waiting to be written about advising dog owners on these most basic of things.
