The ethereal one ...again.

Four hundred allium bulbs have been ordered from Nyssens. Some have also been ordered for the village flower beds. The village ones may survive. By contrast anything planted in the pure clay soil at The Rickety Old Farmhouse gets soaked in the winter and baked solid during the summer. A romantic vision of  swathes of purple flowers lining the drive is likely to remain just that .... a romantic vision. The mayor is effusively grateful for his unexpected gift in a way that suggests he may not know what allium bulbs are. His secretary eyes them up silently with a look of mortal suspicion etched on her face.

After our trip to the town hall with the bulbs Angus and Sophie head off for a cup of coffee and a shared croissant. This mornings croissant a more than respectable 8/10. Sophie ranks it 12/10. At the first bakers there are no Rhum Babas.

We head off to the bakers in the little market hall where we have better luck.  Angus  tops up the order with an Opera and something white and chocolaty with a sad looking raspberry perched on top.

This baker has made a loaf in the shape of a large hand. I've never seen this before . Could it be traditional ? I would ask the young lady behind the counter but it's the ethereal one on duty so I keep the thought to myself.

That hand loaf? Weird. But the cakes look good, and we'll look forward to seeing how the bulbs do.

Do you have a schedule for daily desserts? Because that first bakery certainly had plenty of mouth-watering options, even if it lacked baba au rhum. Speaking of which, did you know baba au rhum is related to a savarin (the mold is different), and that savarin is named after Jean Anthelme Brillat-Savarin, a post-revolution foodie who ALSO has a cheese named after him. Talk about life goals--to have not one, but two, French foods named after oneself.

Strange loaf. Hand? Glove? Perhaps a misinterpretation of a finger bun.

I just love groups of alliums blooming. But remember, the bulbs are quite toxic to dogs should Sophie try to sample or nibble on a few.

It is funny to think of spring with 3 feet of snow in the front yard and another 15cm falling in the next day.

I wonder how one would eat a hand-shaped sandwich? Would one fill each finger and the palm with a selection of different meats, cheeses, egg and perhaps even salads?
Not a bad selection of patisseries today - most of those would pass muster here!

A lovely picture of Sophie in which she's looking rather thoughtful. A large display of purple alliums in full bloom sounds very pretty; hope they will do well.
