The old chair.

Much excitement getting in the dog car. Bob sits on Sophie's side. Sophie lets him know he's an oaf. Bob gets out. Sophie gets in. Why after five years getting in the car should be the source of so much vocal joy is a perennial mystery of dog ownership.

Today Bob is perfecting his owl impression.

At the greengrocers an unusual form of chicory ' La Puntarelle ' makes an appearance  : http://www.specialtyproduce.com/produce/Puntarella_3263.php

We have carted around with us the chair that the Old Pretender ( the father of Bonnie Prince Charlie  and the would be James III ) is said to have sat on as he waited for a French ship to rescue him after his failed attempt to claim the throne in 1715. Out of the blue a breezy young man phones from London to ask if it could be shipped back for an exhibition. Neither of us is sure where it is. ' The Font ' finds it on a corridor , next to a coat rack, looking its age.  It is probably time for it to return home.

I'd love to hear more about the chair and how it came to be in an ROF in France profonde.
Cheers, Gail.

Sophie has that " butter would not melt in my mouth" look this morning. Perhaps it would be nice for the chair to return home for a time. You are both so generous.

We definitely need more about this chair.
Nobody would want anything in our house for an exhibition.

The car spots....it's a sibling thing.

The "Old Pretender" must have been obliged to pretend that he was comfortable while he waited on that chair!

me too. Bob is rockin' the owl look.

Maybe the "Old Pretender" was more concerned about the ship arriving to carry him away, rather than comfort ! Or, of course, he could have had a cushion to sit on - now that would be a find !
Just a thought - why does Bob get out of the car, instead of just shuffling across to his usual spot? When we had three dogs it was every pup for itself when the tailgate was opened, and they never bothered with who sat where !

I realised this morning, as I got my daily fix, that I have a favourite. Sophie can diva as much as she likes. Bob is the love of my life (after my own Megan, of course)

You have made reference to “ the chair “ before. How heavy it is, whose chair it was, how it relocates when you do, but I don’t remember how you obtained this chair. And when you say “ time for it to go back to London “, do you mean for a visit or forever? I believe for Bob and Sophie, getting in the back of the car is a game between them, to keep everyone on their toes!

"Elizabeth Minchilli in Rome", a wonderful food writer and blogger and much more, writes often about puntarelle – shows how it's julienned and the tool to do it with. She gives recipes for the dressing. Your link was very good and actually made me want to try it some time. I'm not keen on bitter foods but the descriptions in your link make it sound bearable.
Thank you always for your posts.

Happy Tuesday! Sophie wants me to tell you she thinks Bob is ever so handsome...she loves the "owl" look and wants to encourage him to keep up the good work.

Sophie seems to be doing the Hokey-Pokey in that first picture: "Put your right foot in, put your right foot out . . ."
The old chair seems notable not just for historic significance and how uncomfortable it looks but as an indication of person size -- people were so much shorter then.

Before your chair returns "home" for good, perhaps you might consider taking a photo or two of Bob PONtificating regally on a chair that looks to be the height of his usual stump seat. Even if the photo is just for your and the Font's eyes, whenever you see or read about the history of the chair in the future, you will also know it was once Bob's chair too!
