A very good morning to you all from a feisty Sophie. This morning she emerges into the daylight looking almost presentable.
Yesterday a trip to the neighbouring department for a Goya exhibition .The menu at the place we stop for lunch informs us that the 'Carte du Jour' will be served in 'reasonable proportions'. Don't think I've ever seen this on a menu before. 'The Font' thinks they are reasonable portions. Angus wonders if somehow there's been a mix up and we've been given the 'petites portions' from the childrens menu.
We had so wanted to enjoy the exhibition but found it uninspiring. The number of exhibits was limited and they were arranged, by subject, in little pavillions. These blocked out the light. A victory of style over practicality. We find ourselves in and out in twenty minutes having lingered as long as we dare. Goya , it has to be said, has a 'dark' side to his work.

Maybe the Goya would have seemed more inspiring if viewed on a full stomach?
The venue seems empty enough inside. Were the paintings in the dark to protect them from sunlight damage?
Re the menu, perhaps by allowing people to choose their entrée/plat/dessert from the entire menu, the restaurant avoids abuses (somebody choosing the most expensive item in each category) by pulling back on quantities. Anyway, when you order a menu like that, the portions tend to be smaller than ordering each item separately. Ils s'adressent aux râleurs.
The philosopher article has potential to be interesting, but for the philosophy. In Swahili, there's no masculine or feminine, not even for people. She/he and him/her are just it and its. You know the pronoun means a person or animal because of the m/wa class (there are seven classes of nouns, and all the pronouns and adjectives have to agree accordingly). Things like that make you rethink a lot of constructs you didn't even realize you had been taking for granted.

I need to spend some time reading fully the article on languages - but as a philsopher and linguist, I commend your pick! As one who feels that royalty has outlived its requirement, I am all for the young uns branching out - though I agree there could be tears... YAM xx
The exhibition sounds like a disappointment - a bit like your lunch.
I would have thought that H&M would maybe have the good grace to just live the quiet life for some time. However if they are not to live off the public purse, they have to pay their way somehow. I think good luck to them. I hope that they get to have some time to themselves and their wee lad away from the pressures they faced.

Sophie is indeed looking almost svelte today - perhaps there were no C-A-T-S to chase?
How annoying that the Goya exhibition was not up to standard. The best place to see the many of his paintings is in the museum dedicated to his work in Toledo, where he spent most of his more productive years.
