Mission accomplished.

A hearty good morning from Sophie who has spent the night in her fancy new bed partying with 'Grey Sausage Dog ' and 'Ginger Rabbit'.  My canine companion greets me enthusiastically then heads out into the garden to check for C-A-T-S. A PONettes work is never done.

There are gaps in the cloud, where the sun peaks through, but generally it's overcast and humid. I don't think we've ever had so much rain.

'The Font' makes it clear there's no point in Angus 'seething' over the billionaires determination to cut down the local flora and fauna.  'What are you going to do about it ?' . I head off to speak to the strimmers. Diplomacy rather than confrontation is called for when facing French workmen. ' How wonderful of you to have left alone the shrubs round the pond. There are three new chicks this week. I knew you wouldn't want to disturb them'. They look at me as if I'm sixpence short of a shilling but follow me to the pond. Sure enough the Moorhen chicks scurry into the shrubbery. One of them is oblivious to our presence and suns himself on a water lily leaf ( look v closely at the photo and you'll see a tiny black blur of movement ). Mother becomes anxious. The strimming men, being French, understand that these small villagers need to be looked after. The chief strimmer scratches his chin and says  ' I'll deal with this. The boss won't be happy but it'll give these little ones time to grow'. Mission accomplished..... for now.

To celebrate this small victory we head off for a really good croissant. 'The Font' says it's almost like being in Paris. Sophie would give these croissant ends a 14/10.

The most sensible thing I've read on climate change this year :https://www.eurointelligence.com/column/averages

14/10 for Angus's diplomatic skills this morning.
Perhaps less diplomacy in the climate change article author's assertion that "averages are for morons"!
It will come as no surprise that one often hears the comment "we could do with some of that global warming here" in Scotland.

Yes, what a relief the shrubs (and the moorhens) have been granted a reprieve - hopefully this will give you time to come up with a longer-term strategy. The piece on climate change was very good - it sort of answers the question "why isn't everybody panicking?" I do wish they would panic. We are having tremendous rains here in Japan as well. In Tokyo, it's just a nuisance, but elsewhere there are floods and mudslides.

Angus, well done, and thank you for putting the case for the moorhen mum and her chicks. Let's hope that the billionaire doesn't decide to exercise what he considers his right, and insist all the foliage around the pond is flattened.
Our sky and weather look very much like yours today, but a cooling breeze has sprung up, thank goodness, and the humidity has dropped. I wouldn't be surprised if it rains later.
There's a dearth of really good croissants here, and it's getting to be almost impossible to find anything more than a grudging 6/10. Inca, of course, would rate any of the flakes and curly ends, a 12/10!

I think your ‘small victory’ is a very huge one! Not only for the moorhens, but for all of us who care about their well-being. Thank you Angus.
