Au Revoir

The Scottish removal men are very efficient. The Chippendale sofas have been taken out through an upstairs window and the bulk of the pictures put into specially made wooden crates. All the books are off the shelves and packed.  I've no idea how long we'll have our desk tops so here are some gratuitous start of day photos of Sophie amid the sunflowers.

Four French 'helpers' are supposedly on their way to pack up the kitchen and the snug but they're an hour late. Despite this the foreman thinks they'll be finished and on their way to the customs clearance station in Paris by seven or eight tonight. We've booked them for a second night in the gites just in case they run over.  Pre-Brexit  moving would have been a case of putting it on a van here and taking it off at the other end. Now, it has to be screened in Paris by the douanes for the princely sum of e450.

On Friday there will be a reception for the villagers to meet the new owner of The Rickety Old Farmhouse. We want this to be a joyous affair. The old and new mayors will be here at noon. Madame Bay ( who wonders if the couturiers workshop can make new curtains for her bedroom ) will be here at 11:45 and the other villagers will show up some time after 12:15. The reception is a perfect chance to use up all the wine that we're not shipping back. The new mayor is quite chuffed. Other mayors have been phoning up asking if it's true that this well known Parisian figure has bought a house in the village. Last week I gave him the couturiers French Wikipedia pages so he has been talking away with great knowledge about this seasons perfume range. I am reminded that the grapevine in French villages is very efficient.

After the gethering for the new owner we shall amble slowly northwards with Sophie in the RHD Volvo. All the passengers will be delighted that it has a fierce aircon system. On Friday the temperatures are due to be back above 40 again.

If Angus can work out how to coordinate Blogger,  the laptop, the i-phone and French country wi-fi there may be updates on our journey north. Of course it's equally likely that he will be defeated by one or all of these.

So until we meet again a hearty 'Au Revoir' from Sophie to all her friends. Her blog will soon change its title to 'Sophie's simply wonderful Scottish adventure'.

Safe travels to Sophie and her keepers. I'm anxious to share in your adventures as they continue at your new home. Give Sophie an ear chuck for me!

Anonymous - From what we hear you can be sure that our neighbours will not disappoint. A small Scottish village is every bit as 'exciting' as a small French one although the food and climate ( and language ) are different.

Oh dear. Not prepared for the au revoir this morning. But all my loving wishes for your bon voyage. And not to be too too nosy...but if everyone now knows who this Parisien new owner is...might we too?

Everything is falling nicely in place. Serendipity indeed. One chapter gently closes, and you all begin a new adventure. It is an exciting and joyous time. Wishing you fair winds and following seas as you head for Scotland. I'm looking forward to Sophie's reaction to a a puffin sighting and pictures taken on bracing walks.

Oh, my word, I am going to miss those idyllic summer shots of sunflowers, trees and sunrise/sunset... but lupins have their own charm, as indeed does this Bonny Land. Which, I might add, is currently bathed in glorious sunshine and hovering around the mid-20s centigrade. Here by the Hutch, this is almost Australian, and the YAMster is in a kind of heaven... Bring on Sophie's Scottish Sojourn!!! YAM xx

Sophie looks very happy, so if you've managed to keep her content and confident through this most tumultuous stage of the move, I'm sure all will be well on the rest of your journey. It is hard to let go of these daily routines we've all come to depend upon, but we look forward to what comes next. I believe you have done a great service to your little corner of France by bringing this wonderful cast of characters to life and sharing with us the ups and downs of life in France profunde.

Sad to see you leave .... the photos are beautiful. Safe journey. What a wonderful new adventure w/ puffins and fields of lupin! All the very best. Will count the days until we read "Sophie's Simply Wonderful Scottish Adventure." From the base of the mini-mountain in Maine.

We hope that the village farewell is not too sad - we have been with you for very many years and know it had a place in your heart. We hope that you, the Font and Sophie will have an easy journey. You have done so much in the last few weeks and will really earn a rest soon. Take care of yourselves, we will all be waiting for any news and will be relieved when you arrive safe and sound.

Do have a safe trip to your new home. What is your ETA for arriving at the Scottish home? Can’t believe how quickly and efficiently you made arrangements, decluttered and got things ready for the journey. We hope to get daily or nearly daily updates of your travels if possible. May we please get French couturiers website? Maybe he will post stories of his new home and the village.

I had no idea this morning when I said it felt like being in a car rushing down a steep hill without working brakes that this was to be the last day. Those packer are wonders!
Thanks for the last look at Sophie with the sun setting behind her and the sunflowers. Hope the introduction of the new owner goes well and the parting with your friends isn't too sad. Travel comfortably and safely - see you soon at

Happy trails to you all!
The biggest compliment I can give your blog (and you) is that I arrived here many years ago to get my Francophile fix...but I shall follow Sophie's Scottish adventures with as much anticipation and joy. (Il y aura encore des croissants, non?)

Best wishes for a relaxing and safe trip to your new home. I hope you take some time to take a deep breath, have some wine and enjoy the adventure.

Safe travels!

Has Sophie ever had the wonder known as a Rowie? Seeing as your mover is frm Aberdeen, I'm thinking you'll be near there.

Just tell her a Rowie is the Aberdonian version of a croissant but tastier.

The Bougalou Bear said...

I will miss your chronicle of life dans un petit coin du Tarn et Garonne profond, all the colorful characters who, somehow, became far away members of a somewhat extended family, and the daily croissant rating.
What is the Scottish equivalent of croissant, if there is such a thing? Asking for a friend...

Bon voyage et bonne route!

If anyone has a chance to make the new owner of the ROFH make curtains, Madame Bay does, but I would love to see her face when she sees the quote for them!

I hope Loic and the Matron are able to join your Friday gathering, so Loic knows there is change and perhaps has the chance to continue on at the ROFH for the new owner.

Having followed your blog since Italy I will miss your daily record of life in a small French village, the cast of characters, photos (thanks for the sunflowers today!), and all the little things you record which make me smile.

I wish you, The Font, and Sophie all the best for Sophie’s Serendipitous Road Trip to Scotland, and for many new adventures ahead of you all which I look forward to reading in Sophie’s next blog.

Best wishes for a safe and uneventful trip north. Your Scotch Adventure is going to involve many cooler days, isn't it? I look forward to hearing how is settles down. There will be some very tearful villagers, I suspect. You have been good neighbours.

I wish you a safe and wonderful trip North! I,too, will miss the French villagers, the Moorhens, the old farmer, the baker, etc. Your new adventure is about to start and I am looking forward to seeing it through Sophie's (and your) eyes. Thank you for your generosity in sharing your past experiences - safe travels!

Safe travels northwards! I will miss your petit coin de la France profonde - my breakfast read every day. But welcome to Scotland and new adventures. Lower temperatures, although in my Scottish village at the moment everyone feels it's "affa het".
@The Bougalou Bear - the Scottish equivalent of the croissant is the buttery. And of course for pâtisserie substitute "fancy pieces". Many delights in store!

After you said you were coming home, I had planned to walk y dog, who is coming to France, past your gates, to see if Sophie was on her stump. Next Friday. I am sorry I can't do that, because I wanted to give you a personal message. Over the last year, my husband sickened and died of a brain tumour. Yours is the only blog we read, and he was still asking for updates mere days before he died. When Sophie was I'll in early May, I kept it from him till she recovered. You all were very important to him/us, and I thank you dearly. Thank you for the pleasure you gave him.

My cyber stalking of Scottish Estate Agents web sites has been less successful than my finding your home in the Lomagne. (It was the war memorial that did it- I found a likeness on a web page of French war memorials. I hope that does not sound creepy. I just loved picturing where you were and in which town on each trip).

Wherever your new home is, I hope you are all as happy there as is possible.

Bon retour.

Thank you Angus for this happy yet poignant final update on life in the ROF and a small French village. Looking forward to the Scottish adventures to come.

Angus, there are many words, and yet so few, to express my gratitude to you, ‘The Font’, Sophie, and Bob. I began reading your blog when Bob and Sophie were puppies. I enjoyed visiting your quaint village every morning. The people, other animals, and photographs, you introduced us to, have been charming. Your and ‘The Fonts’ generous hearts shown repeatedly through your acts of kindness. My most cherished memories will be of you, Sophie and Bob, sitting on the concrete storm drain, looking out at the beautiful landscape, discussing thousands of topics or nothing. Thank you. I am excited for you, and us your readers, as we all move to Scotland!

Late in catching up with your final days/hours. I'm not surprised there have been tears and many of them. You all have been so precious to this small community. Delighted to hear that your saga will continue in northern climes. May the remaining stages north go well (after the less than dog-friendly hotel).
