Relaxed and happy.

Sunrise. The next semester starts at the university in a couple of weeks . The first of the new intake of students starting to drift into town. Lights now glowing in buildings that have been empty and dark since the start of the summer. Down by the castle there's a beachside bonfire burning away. Around it a group of a dozen or so youngsters all talking with that earnestness that's the preserve of just turned eighteen year olds. Angus assumes that they have been chatting 'earnestly' all through the night.

On our morning tour of the town Sophie stops off to drink from dog bowls that have been positioned to help visiting pooches cope with the searing (20 degree ) heat. This one is at a house facing the castle. Sometimes a dog biscuit can be found alongside the bowl. Sophie is of the view that urban living has its advantages. She also has a drink from a bowl outside a hotel overlooking the R&A. So far on our walks we've found nine alfresco dog bowls.

Our unpacking unearths some unusual items that should have been discarded. A Dukakis for President hand out from 1988. When wound up the eagle plays 'Yankee Doodle Dandy'. How many of these still exist ? Come to that who remembers Mike Dukakis ?

More importantly one of Sophies old acquaintances is also uncovered. This is happily savaged for a full ten minutes. Contentment is being reunited with a savageable friend.

Last night, on our post dinner walk, we passed  an American Law Society gathering.  Angus observed 1) most men were wearing sunglasses with their kilts - an accessory not usually needed in the sun free highlands 2) a number of kilts were 2" too short ( never a good look ) and 3) a large number of gentlemen were wearing sashes and tartan 'bunnets' with pheasant feathers poking out of them at jaunty angles. The gathering provided a full twenty minutes of entertainment for both dog and companion. All the participants seemed very relaxed and happy.

The buildings are lovely, we would sit and people watch too. Sophie looks quite satisfied with her toy and the biscuits.

American law students in Scotland should be a fun crowd, a rather bright gathering.

I am somewhat surprised that the eagle and its button passed muster and survived to come to Scotland! On the other hand, it could be repurposed (temporarily) for each US election. You live in a very dog-centric town; how nice.

I see that "Sophie's absolutely wonderful Scots Adventure" has arrived. The font has worked her magic!
You have landed in another dog-thoughtful community and Sophie must be in heaven. The vistas for us humans is different from France but equally spectacula.
I remember Mike Dukakis - our paths crossed in Boston's Fenway when we both made our way to Brookline. I very nice man.

A relative is getting married at Eilean Donan castle this fall. The bride and groom and everybody attending are Americans, none of whom has ever set foot in Scotland. The men, except for the groom, will wear kilts. I don't think any thought went into which plaid anybody would wear, unless it was to go with the wedding colors. The groom has been told he can't wear a kilt because he isn't a Scot. The bride's father's family descended from the MacRaes, who knows how long ago, and I don't know whether they actually have some sort of claim on the place (as they say they do--"our family has a castle in Scotland") or whether they just picked it out for a destination wedding. I expect many etiquette and driving rules (they're all renting cars) to be broken. I kind of hope to be invited just for the spectacle of it all.

I had to grin that you have a Dukakis campaign handout! For me, the year of 1988 brings back more memories than Dukakis for President does. But out of curiosity and just because I have too much time on my hands this morning, I quickly looked up Dukakis memorabilia on eBay, and found only the button that's got a starting bid of about $8 dollars - But no wind up eagle. You may need to hold onto it for another 33 years.

Enjoy your day and people watching!

Ahh Dukakis. He was not looked upon with fondness here in MA by my parents generation.

It looks as though the water bowls, and the promise of the occasional biscuit will plot the future course of your town walks. Is the half sausage still on offer from the nice chef?
How was the meet and greet in the village hall yesterday? Any interesting characters - perhaps another fashionista like Madame Bay?

We were startled a few days ago to see our governor, allegedly aspiring to be president, publish a Dukakis-like ad with him in helmet and on a military vehicle. I suspect he was trying for a Tom Cruise/Top Gun look. But it brought a helmet-clad Dukakis back to life. Not as endearing as your eagle memorabilia. So yes folks do remember.

On a trip to Scotland many years ago, my father-in-law ordered a kilt (ancient Duncan tartan) and all the accessories that went with it. When it arrived many months later, a brochure with detailed instructions on wearing the kilt was included. Dad didn't wear the kilt very often, but when he did, he wore it proudly and correctly.

I had the same thought as Jake when I saw the Florida governor's ad - it reminded me of Mike Dukakis and seemed just as ill-advised, particularly given that DeSantis served as a lawyer not a pilot. Whoever could have imagined that the eagle toy was a good idea? I think the dog bowls intended to protect Sophie and her friends against the 20 degree heat are much better.
