Beany day.

A stiff cold wind blowing in from the Atlantic. Before heading off Angus pops on a beany and a scarf. Humans may think it's a bit chilly but the PONs are of the opinion that these bracing conditions are ideal. This is certainly setting itself up as the best day ever.

The gardeners show up to replace 35 lavenders along the drive. Some lavenders thrive and grow to be four feet tall. Others hang on for a season and then shrivel and abruptly die. Hardly surprising. The soil here is pure clay - saturated in wet winters and baked solid in the hot summers.

This morning Angus and the PONs sit on the storm drain and discuss Beto's hand movements, the first veto and Christchurch. Of these New Zealand is the most shocking and sad and unexpected. We ignore Brexit. Having put the world to rights we head back to The Rickety Old Farmhouse . Sophie is keen to get involved in the gardening. It is quickly suggested that she come inside and leave the gardeners alone.

Nothing but nothing is as delicious as the stagnant water in the zinc bath by the village pond.

This house is probably as isolated as you can get in Scotland. Angus looks at it and thinks of bracing walks. 'The Font' looks at it and wonders where you'd go for milk  : https://vimeo.com/288507859

It's been bracing woolly hat weather in Aberdeen too this week. And presumably at Fearna Lodge, although the typical weather conditions in the Lochinver area are under-represented in the sales video. Emergency milk supplies may be a problem but you could run up Suilven every morning for exercise!
Cheers, Gail (deeply saddened to hear about terrible massacre in peace-loving New Zealand).

I live in New Zealand and while we always knew we were never going to immune to what happens in the big wild world it still has come as a shock that an unprecedented terrorist attack has happened in Gods Own country. Kai Kaka Stay strong.

Cant believe we are living through yet another "situation" that makes international headlines. Horrific numbers of fatalities and injuries are coming out now - surreal feeling tonight. Some relief they have arrested four people. Thank you for your message. My son was installing fibre broadband at the Linwood Mosque yesterday.... so glad it wasn't today!

As usual, I'm with the Font on that lodge. Scarier than milk is how long is the drive to the emergency room?
Hurray for chick peas. Had some for lunch yesterday in fact.
Some mulch of Loic's leaves might help your lavender.

Yes - pretty shocking news.

Something doubly shocking about doing this to people while they're praying. Our thoughts are with you all today.

Our prayers are with you. Don't know what else to say - this is New Zealand we're talking about. Things like this don't happen there.

If you live somewhere that remote you don't do emergencies.

Glad you're ok

We weren’t expecting earthquakes either.... been a few helicopters circling all evening so police still active. Adrenaline warn off... now just very tired and numb, and sad and gobsmacked....

Am late to the table here today - been trying to get my head around the NZ news... had been brushing up my awareness prior to my trip downunder, so can talk current affairs with 'me mates'; however, everything paled regarding OZ when NZ has had to face this. As you comment above - it's one of those places these things 'do not happen'. What horrifies in addition to the place and time, is the prime suspect is and Aussie. What the...???

My heart was eased by viewing Suilven, my Suilven. Lochinver and Ullapool for supplies, one hour round trip. Nae bother. Wi' all that land, a household milch coo widnae be out o' order! Maybe a greenhouse to grow your own chickpeas... YAM xx

The place in Scotland reminds me of a blog I followed until late last year that was written by a young couple who for 6 months were lighthouse keepers on Maatsuyker Island off the southern coast of Tasmania. It was hard work and dedication and was of course totally off the grid. Think of the adventures any dog could have there.

Thank you for your comment on my blog today. I'd not heard of garlic and fenugreek tablets. So, after I caught up on the morning news of the horrific and sad tragedy in Christchurch (I've no words, just sadness) I read about it. Definitely something to ask my holistic vet about, especially since it says it helps with inflammation. A concern for both Joy and Charlie.

The news of Christchurch is heartbreaking. Thoughts and prayers are with you.

That lodge in Scotland seems to have solar panels, also no noisy neighbors.
Other than that, stop the world, I want to get off.
