Fresh paw prints in the mud by the river bank. Sophie gets lost in a hyperactive reverie of badger, fox and deer scents. Finally, she remembers that she's there for a drink. The water levels in the stream much lower now. Last weeks angry roar replaced by a gentle murmur. She turns and gives me a quick ' Are you sure this is alright ?' look before she heads to the waters edge.
Back at home a wet beard and mud encrusted paws are evidence that the day has started off well. As we turn into the courtyard the first snowflakes start to drift down from the sky. This mornings priority ? The old tree peonies will need to be covered in gauze to keep the frost away from their buds.

Mud! Don't talk to me about mud! With this week's rain and sleet, on top of a wet December, after walks where normally Bertie's paws would require a quick rinse he now needs immersion up to his belly and a thorough shampoo.
Cheers! Gail (trying to stay positive in lockdown Scotland - reading this blog always helps).
Knowing what a Diva Sophie can be, I'm always surprised that she lets her paws and beard get so muddy - it rather spoils the image. But perhaps the satisfaction of a slurp from the stream is just too much fun.
Cold here again this morning, so it looks as though all Europe is in for some real winter weather. Shortly we're off to walk along by the beach in the hope it may be a degree or two warmer.
I'm glad the river is behaving again - I love the shot of Sophie looking back for affirmation. We are about to start another state of emergency in Tokyo from Thursday. The government flipped from "no need" to "maybe on Friday" to "well, Thursday" in less than 24 hours, which makes me wonder what is up.
