Sweet or savoury ?

Highlight of Friday was the arrival of a large truck  which parked in front of the church. On its trailer a four wheel drive machine that seemed to have something to do with drilling. What or where it's was going to be drilling remains an unanswered mystery. The trucks 3 occupants spent much of their day kicking a football around on the frost covered village green. The truck and its occupants disappeared at lunchtime, reappeared in the afternoon and then disappeared again at four.

This morning there's no sign of the truck . Perhaps it's done whatever it planned to do ? However, the village pond that is home to the Moorhen family has frozen over. Is the long forecast Snowmageddon on its way ?

I've never seen Sophie so sprightly. Sub zero temperatures and a thick coating of frost on the grass have her scooting along the lane like a puppy. Sophie would like a two hour walk. We settle on forty five minutes. Back in the kitchen she hunkers down to wait while the lunchtime roast chicken cooks, enticingly, away. Some dogs have sweet dreams, Sophie has savoury ones.

Temperatures well below zero here in Aberdeen at the moment. Bertie is hoping for a two hour walk today, while his owner is thinking more along the lines of curling up on the sofa with a book about the history of Sophie's homeland, by Adam Zamoyski. The book has bewildering (but also helpful) number of maps showing the different boundaries of Poland over the ages, and there is frequent use of terms favoured by our current PM - 'sovereignty' and 'vassal state'!

8º here this morning, and after two days of continuous rain there is finally a hint of pale blue sky and weak sunshine, rapidly disappearing as the storm clouds gather once again. Inca and I have not had a walk since Wednesday afternoon - it's just impossible with everywhere flooded and a howling gale threatening to knock us off our feet! Not the sort of weather one associates with Spain - but well - it is our winter, and we have to suffer now for the warmer days to come.
I wonder if the drilling machine occupants were keeping a very low profile and hiding away - just in case someone expected them to work on a Friday?

Cold in Tokyo as well, although it's all relative. Certainly not as conducive to long walks as our last state of emergency. Except for Charlie, who was allowed his first brief walk on a leash outside yesterday. He won't finish his third round of shots until early February but the vet said it would be ok now if we keep it short and keep away from areas where there are a lot of dogs. He was so thrilled with the whole adventure and stopped dead in his tracks in amazement when he encountered a child human for the first time. It seems that poodles are pretty smart, although in a very different way from a PON.

Have you read about the polar vortex splitting in two? Too complicated for me, but the bottom line seems to be that there's a lot of cold weather (and snow in certain areas) ahead before Spring.

After a minus eight night, it has been three degrees here by the Hutch... "feels like" zero. The clouds are wrapping the hills very darkly though and dampness prevails, so possibility temps will rise. Funny thing - an enormous truck with Hiab drove past here yesterday. These streets are not built for 'heavy plant' so I hope it had true purpose!!! YAM xx
