Effusive.

The shelf stackers are having a pre-opening cigarette break outside the supermarket. These days the supermarket opens at six and closes at midnight. In the hours in between this small army beaver away refilling the storage areas and unloading deliveries . Despite the early hour they say hello to Sophie by name.

By six am we're outside the university where Sophie is greeted , effusively, by the cleaning ladies waiting for their bus home. Many of the cleaning ladies are Polish which means the Polish Lowland Sheepdog is spoken to in her native language. It goes without saying Angus is ignored.

The fishing boats have headed off early this morning. Sophie finds a puddle of marine engine anti-freeze . She is 'encouraged' along.

By the end of our hour's walk the sun is up and the sky blue. I'd have thought it impossible but there are even more vans parked outside the university buildings this morning. I catch sight of one that's come all the way from East Kilbride. The hourly rates must be good and the problem severe to get people to drive from the other side of the country.

Sophie opts for a restorative moment or two of contemplative battery recharging under the acer in the garden. This is her 'I'm invisible so don't even think of bothering me' spot.

My goodness - out by six!
It doesn't get light until after 7 a.m. here. No walk this morning as it's already too hot and very humid. Rain is forecast "on and off" for today, but the sun is up and smiling and Inca is already hunkered down on the tiles in a cool spot.
Don't the nice Polish ladies know about Ginger snaps?

Coppa G - Sadly neither the supermarket staff nor the Polish ladies are thinking of Ginger Snaps at six am .

What is it about the early morning light in those first two photos that immediately speaks of The North?

Try hovering outside Sainsburys on the morning walk. They sell Ginger Snaps! Isn't it about time that Nobby let us know what his favourite Scottish treat is or is he determined to keep it a secret!! Aberdeen is far enough away from St Andrews to prevent competition! Come on Nobby!! Angela

The mornings and the evenings here are already 'drawing in,' and leaves are just starting to turn. It's as if they all knew it turned to September yesterday. Well done to Sophie for already finding hidey-holes. YAM xx

Reply to Angela: Nobby says it is no secret that shortbread (all butter, of course) is his favourite Scottish treat.

Sophie looks very comfortable in that hiding spot she's found in the garden. As, alas, no couturier has arrived on our doorstep wanting to buy our apartment, we are starting the process of showing it to potential buyers. Looking at houses in France helped drive home that the place must look very tidy, even if we can't quite achieve that same pristine "coffee table books on the coffee table" look. We've been working away at it all week, and poor Charlie does not seen to have Sophie's gift of equanimity - he's very confused. I guess it is good for us to learn this now, at Stage 1 of the arduous process.
