The man who teaches at the oceanographic institute thinks this is how it will be from now on. Climate change is warming the North Sea. This in turn warms the air and warmer air can carry more moisture. So our future winters are likely to be milder but with heavier rainfall. What no one knows is why the winds have been so exceptionally strong. The oceanographic man helpfully points out that gales like this may not be so unusual. One end of the cathedral blew down in a particularly fierce storm in 1272. This was supposed to be a reassuring observation but we're not sure it is.
The bookstore serves complimentary hot beverages for early shoppers seeking a respite from the winds. We navigate round a retired couple who are enjoying a pot of tea and a plate of digestive biscuits.
The young lady behind the counter is dealing with a large shipment of books. It seems the locals have enthusiastically pre-ordered copies of 'Barbra' . It is due to be published on Tuesday but has arrived here early. Who would have thought this American chanteuse would have been so popular with the towns dour burghers ? Further along the road the cafe is filling up the window with raspberry, blueberry and white chocolate scones. These are much in demand as a post partying pick me up by the towns teenage inhabitants.
Down on the beach the extent of the erosion is plain.
Finally we make it to the small Italian cafe. This morning Angus has gone out without his eye patch. This may not have been such a good idea as the wind seems to have been head on for our entire walk. It is a relief to be without the 'Cousin of Frankenstein' accessory.
We order two Espressos and chocolate cakes to take away. Or, to be more precise, Angus orders two Espresso and chocolate cakes to take away. 'The Font' wonders how anyone can think of cakes at this time in the morning. On a quiet Sunday morning the barista seems happy to take the order.

A more lusty version of La Mer than I remember from his recordings. It suits the weather you're experiencing.
Pistachio and rosewater here please (they all look good enough to takeaway....breakfast, lunch, dinner, supper....)
Those scones look perfect to me for fuelling a good few miles on the bicycle!
Cheers, Gail.
The café owner has obviously found an excellent scones niche in the market! As has the Italian café, judging by your order! Although I'm not vegan I rather like the sound of the Sicilian lemon cake.
We've had very strong winds here, almost gale force, and this mornings dog walk was an assault course with tree branches littering the roads and pavements. The local beach seems to have missed the devastation that yours has suffered. There were plenty of people sunbathing but not many in the sea, a complete change from last week.
Cake is perfect anytime.
Sicilian lemon cake sounds perfect.
One each of those cakes, please. Oh, and a blueberry scone! How does the eye work sans patch? Was the surgery a success?
