A jet.

On our 5:30 am walk we hear the sound of jet engines. Someone must have started flying into - or out of - Toulouse airport. Another milepost on the road to normality if not recovery.

This mornings croissant a disappointment. Tastes more like processed loaf than croissant. Sophie disagrees. Her tail thwacks happily away against the aluminium table leg. At this unearthly hour we are the only customers. The tables that have been set up in the car park empty. It will be an hour before the first of the white van men show up. Angus shares with his furry companion the comment by Senator Rubio that ' I only write on twitter. Never read it'. This clears him of any need to answer questions about overnight twitter storms. Sophie thinks this is a somewhat one sided approach to communication.

This morning the bakers display cabinet is full of colour. We opt for a mille feuille ( for me ) and a cheesecake for 'The Font' . Angus is willing to wager that 'The Font' will take one boite of the cheescake, say 'delicious' and then slide it across the table. Waste not want not.

We're the first in the greengrocers. Green tomatoes on display. We buy a kilo. Dog yoghurts and carrots round off our purchases.

I get the sense you struggle with moral hazard issues in selecting pastries for "The Font"! Too bad about the croissant - can everyone in France have forgotten how to make them in just these few months? On the other hand, I would kill for a couple of those Provencal tomatoes in the foreground of your photo. They remind me of the sometimes oddly shaped but always delicious "beefsteak" tomatoes that are another New Jersey strong suit (whereas Japan highly values symmetry in its produce).

I would have found the pastry selection difficult this morning - several intensely appealing options there (if you're not 'the 'Font').
The Roman city article is fascinating. The geophysics of uncovering subsurface structures has come a long way since my Imperial College master's degree exercise using a hammer and a geophone to detect the underground car park in Hyde park!
Cheers, Gail.

How could you limit yourself to just two of those gorgeous cakes? Angus, the secret is to take a selection for 'The Font' - then you can eat the rejects!

Plotting an ancient Roman city with radar and detecting flashes from the universe using AI all in one blog post. The rig used to carry the radar equipment gave me a smile because of its simplicity.
At least Senator Rubio spoke...most of that bunch just hide behind their masks in silence these days.
