Barely gone six and it's already warm. New born calves and their mothers lying basking in the morning sun . One calf is too busy suckling to notice as we pass. Sophie has no intention of greeting them. She hurries along, head down. If you don't see them they can't be a threat.
At the cafe on the square new perspex screen have been installed to stop aerosol dispersion. They don't look at all bad. Angus could quite happily live with these. How scientifically efficient they are at such a low height is another matter.
Infection rates are continuing to fall as people move outside. Even at this early hour the outdoor cafes are beginning to fill up. The general rule - Outside : good. Inside : bad. The country is soon to open up to foreign visitors, That will be the first real test of how things are under control.
In front of the cathedral they've dug an enormous hole. It has a surprising number of large beams/ pipes running across it. Whatever can it be for ? The wonderful little wine store that sold Grand Cru Chablis at a great price has pulled down its shutters for the very last time. Another pandemic casualty.

I agree the perspex screens look good. I keep looking at the photos of the steps some restaurants have taken to make themselves "safe" and thinking I'd never want to eat there with all that paraphernalia reminding me of the pandemic. These screens create more of a sense of privacy. I have to correct you on the Grateful Dead - they were definitely not heavy metal, more psychedelic jam band. I worked for the Dead a long time ago as a publicist - they were one of the most successful touring bands in the world, famous for allowing everyone to freely record their live performances. As a consequence, they never made that much money selling records, and that may help explain the deodorant and all sorts of other strange Dead-branded merchandise. My husband was once given a Jerry Garcia necktie, which seemed particularly inappropriate.

It would take more than a few low perspex screens to spoil the attractive café environment. Unfortunately the 'outside good, inside bad' philosophy will not work so well for the restaurant owners in Aberdeen...

Scottish restaurants can't really count on outdoor dining. Even in St Andrews you'd probably be able to count the nights you could sit comfortably outside on one hand.
One of the cafés I visit regularly has a Perspex screen above the counter, that looks as though it comes from a bank. It's about 2 m. high but with a gap below, just enough to push your money through, or receive one of their delicious cakes or loaves. My friend and I had a fit of the giggles the first time we encountered it. Wearing masks and plastic disposable gloves, we felt as though we should be part of a hold-up gang!
Those pipes do look sort of sewery.
Too hot to sit out of doors in most of southern US at present. Hence everyone's jammed indoors in probably germ-laden air conditioning...VERY bad. Trump headed to Phoenix, Arizona, today where predictions are for 110F.
The cows with their calves are such a peaceful sight.
