You never ever see C-A-T-S in town. This morning an extremely large one passes us heading down the road. It looks up revealing a face that has been battle hardened in frequent fights with seagulls and other C-A-T-S. The C-A-T is extremely large and luxuriantly furry. It is lucky never to have had a run in with a PONette.
Outside a local fast food establishment a philosophical challenge.
At the wee house in town there's a small dark room at the front that's rarely used. It used to be on the ground floor but over the last five or six centuries the ground level outside has risen so now it's a kind of semi-basement with the windows at pavement level. People walking by can peer down into it. Passing children frequently do. In the recent heatwave its proven to be the coolest and most comfortable place to sit. We decided to improve the lighting, brighten the walls and turn it into a smaller library. Shutters have been installed. The joiners came on Tuesday to put in the new bookcases. These are decidedly utilitarian and aren't what we ordered.
Angus asks the joiner if he usually makes bookcases with screws that stand proud of the shelving. This does not generate a 'positive' response. Nor does a question about the absence of uplights.
Over dinner it is agreed that 'The Font' will take over future dealings with the joiner. It is felt that Angus's willingness to have a 'difficult conversation' should be deferred until the kitchen has been finished. One of us thinks the bookcases are not what had been agreed. The other, perhaps more practically, thinks ' Thank God we've got 30 boxes of books out of the garage'.

There has, of course, to be a library. But no cats in town? How odd.
And gosh, the Kings Cross area seems to have changed since I was last there.
Cheers, Gail.
Shutters make such a difference - extra insulation, too.
A library, how lovely.
Looking at the photos, we are not so aware of the inadequacies of the new shelving. Now that they are filled with books, they look acceptable and do the job.
A C-A-T! My goodness it's a good job Sophie isn't around to see that brute off.
What a difference those 30 boxes of books make to that room!
A well read life. I might have scared the joiner away, and it is hard to find a new second one in the middle of a job. The last house in Florida, was missing two feet of kitchen, but I needed to move in - it was built in 71 days from permit to move it. I just turned my head and said, well done.
Despite understandable disappointment, the new library is quite a cheerful space. Now I'm wondering if the books are arranged in a particular order.
Books make everything better. x
The library is very nice! The Font has a penchant for decorating. I am scratching my head though: what are those screws even screwing?? Seriously? Absolutely not acceptable IMHO. I think this is the new post-pandemic philosophy among builders/workmen though: “they’ll be so happy it’s done, they won’t focus on what’s wrong!” ;-) Liz in Oregon
Is it possible? Half an empty shelf???
Crisp white and books on the shelves...heavenly.
Congratulations despite the aggravations.
