After rain earlier in the week the weather improves and ushers in a beautifully clear night. We stand in the garden and watch shooting stars. 150 an hour are expected. After ten minutes we've seen five. Two humdingers and three that barely register. Perhaps shooting stars are like Edinburgh Corporation buses? You wait for ever and nothing happens and then they all come along at once. After another barren five minutes we head inside to watch the first of the new episodes of 'The Crown' on Netflix. It too promises more than it delivers.
In a town of 16,000 permanent inhabitants the departure of 10,000 students can't be missed. From the deserted streets I'd make a guess that yesterday was peak 'heading home' time. We walk from the beach to the cathedral without seeing a soul apart from the operators of the large yellow crane lifting blocks of sandstone into the golf club car park. They must be being paid overtime. Things won't pick up again until this time next week when the town will get hectic with families booked into the large golf hotels for their five day Christmas or Hogmanay 'packages'.
The farm shop has fresh beans and chestnuts. They also have door garlands which act as a reminder that we must pick ours up from the florists this afternoon. 'The Font' will be spending today at home waiting for the gas technician to come and deal with the cookers wayward hotplate ignition system. ' I'll be there just as soon as I can - probably in the morning but maybe around lunchtime ' as specific as he's willing to be.
Christmas tree biscuits this mornings seasonal offering in the bakers. In an interesting twist green frogs appear and share the top of the display cabinet alongside snowmen.

I hope your wee eye procedure went well and any eye patch will be of short duration.
We shall attempt to see the Geminids this evening - doubtless, clouds will impede our plans. I gather that frogs were symbols of rebirth in Renaissance art.
Interesting comment above. I wonder if there's a bored art history student working in the bakery?
Today's joyfully innocent Christmas music brought a tear to my eye.
Cheers, Gail.
Goodness, the bakery has suddenly gone into Christmas overdrive!
Frogs and ?large pink bells? on the shelf above.
Oh yes, one does wonder at the large pink confections above the very interesting frogs and charming snowmen. I too am under temporary house arrest waiting for the unpredictable plumber to arrive. Like the Font, I am in hopes it shall be sooner rather than later. Hope your eye is doing fine.

As with Gail, I was deeply affected by the Ukrainian choir, clearly enjoying themselves and with no inkling of what was ahead... YAM xx
The selection at the farm shop looks very appealing, although I'm not so sure about the bakers - at least no mince on sight today.
Google Photo located the restaurant, that looks like fun.
Thank you, Travel. I was wondering if that was a huge or a restaurant. Quite beautiful! Like Gail and YAM, the Ukrainian choir made me sad...Frogs as subs f re-birth? Why not! Hoping you're looking dapper in your eye patch!
