Dependent on the other.

Scottish autumn nights. From the garden we watch the moon rise over the bay. For these evening excursions the two of us now dress like eskimos - four layers is good, five is better. We enjoy a glass of wine with a shaggy sheepdog slumbering at our feet. ( PONs it has to be said make excellent foot warmers ). Sometime, between seven thirty and eight, there's  that magical moment when absolute silence descends , the birds return to roost in the long grass and the deer appear in the fields. If it's calm the sea reflects the moon. The large naval vessel that's been out there for the last three nights has gone. A smaller one has taken its place. It glides slowly backwards and forwards on the horizon between here and Denmark.

This morning Sophie is up early, her energy levels restored after that hour long hare chase. It's supposed to be a bone tingling four degrees but it turns out to be bright and mild. The family diva ignores the village Jack Russells. They get the 'Oafs !' look. She greets the potato farmer like a long lost friend and approaches the two young builders getting ready to work on the doocot roof. Sophie's hopeful the builders may have Jaffa Cakes or at least biscuits. Instead she gets an ear scrunch. Better that than nothing. This morning the 'two word' man in his orange jacket is nowhere to be seen.

We're barely through the gate when the postman arrives. He's brought a parcel from Betty's in Harrogate . Ordered yesterday and delivered this am. How's that for service ? There's nothing quite like their Fondant Fancies .

There's also a fruit cake and ..

... a Lemon and Lime Cake. This is one of those companies that is a joy to do business with. For those who have lived abroad for the better part of twenty years rediscovering these old British family firms is like rediscovering old friends. 'The Font' wonders if we should use Betty's for this years Christmas cake or go back to our old shipper ? : https://collinstreet.com/cryer-creek-fruitcake We certainly won't be cooking in the sea shore cottage which has an oven the size of a postage stamp. The kitchen company are talking about getting to work in March but the architect doesn't think work on the extension will take place until next August. One is dependent on the other.

Life is far too short not to enjoy good cake, so consider buying both Christmas cakes to savor, enjoy and compare as I'm guessing you wouldn't just limit yourself to one type of wine over the festive season!

Angus, I'm catching up on your blog posts and think it is a sign after revisiting "the hare that haunts you and your thoughts" in the shop, Sophie tries to get one for you the very next day. One way or another there will be a hare with you, "The Font" and Sophie, and if it is the one from the shop I'd love to see a photo or video of Sophie meeting it for the first time. :)

Your photo of the moon is beautiful. I can see why it is worth bundling up for the view. The Lemon & Lime cake is very appealing.

Stunning photo of moonlight over the North Sea.
I am thinking that Betty's in Harrogate and Collin Street Bakery will be doing good business with a certain PON owning household on the eastern flank of Scotland, given the architect's projected timescale...

The Twitter photo is taken in a zoo in France. Montpellier Animal Park I vaguely remember, something like that.

The photo of the moon is serene.
Angus, knowing 'The Font' only takes "a bite" from these sweet goodies, do you eat the rest? Many, many years ago, my parents and I had afternoon tea at Betty's in Harrogate.

Maybe one of each cake - then you can decide which rates higher. Good service and quick shipping.
I have had items shipped and delivered from the US to NZ quicker than items from across the city.

That moon shot is worthy of framing.

I baked my holiday fruitcake a couple of weeks ago, it is aging in good whiskey and brandy (just like mom used to do.) Bettys looks delightful, glad to see they are still in business.

Just when we thought that your Blog couldn't get any better! The cakes from Bettys look very appealing. A friend swears by their 'Fat Rascal' cakes and has them delivered for a treat. The fruit cake seems to be in a lovely tin that would make a useful keepsake.
The delays to your Plans are very disappointing - so sorry.

We just got our first mailing from Collins Street Bakery. Last year we had two fruitcakes from them. I ordered one and my husband, afraid I might not have, ordered another. They both disappeared tastily.

When we lived in Alaska I remember bundling up to watch the northern lights - a show that never disappointed. I've read that you can see them in Scotland when conditions are right.

Kim - Yes on good nights you can see the green and reds of the northern lights. A shimmering quite unlike anything else. They seem to appear when there's solar storms. All we have today are dozens of jet fighters flying overhead - which is strangely unsettling.

Oh the Betty’s goodies look delicious. A friend gave me a box of Scottish breakfast tea from Taylor’s of Harrogate. I was able to locate a place to order all sorts of varieties of Taylor’s teas and they ship to our home in Washington state. Delightful
