The old mayor telephones from France. The right wing won 56% of the village votes in the first round of the elections and seem set to replicate this in Sundays second round. The local farmers are disenchanted with the cost of living and Parisian aloofness. The mayor tells me that the election is doing little , if anything, to calm down village disputes.
I thought the garden would look battered after the recent rain but the roses seems to be holding up. The gardener has cut back the lupins in the courtyard which is one of those seasonal 'shocks' . The place looks very denuded.
The bar in what used to be the Salvation Army hall is being 're-engineered'. Fancy cocktails proved to be a tad too exotic for these deeply Presbyterian parts. The owners are now rebranding the property as a trendy sea food restaurant. 'Shack' is clearly the in word for seafood outlets. Dover Sole at £28 seems reasonable. The Octopus hot dog survives.
The bookstore is visited by two early rising American golfers. ' You got anything on the Old Course ?' asks a gentleman wearing an East Lakes Atlanta PGA baseball cap. The young staff member shows him to a wall of Old Course books. There's probably five hundred to choose from many of them of the ' I spent a year in St.Andrews as a caddy and survived ' variety .
This weeks reading has been a delight. The Roads to Rome has proved to a gentle and amusing travelogue written by an intrepid young woman.
Angus enjoyed this offering from Oxford although even the bookshop admitted it was esoteric and had to be ordered in.
Down on the beach a man and his labrador are spending quality time together. 'Bruce' the labrador is standing in the water and wondering why his owner isn't joining him. Bruce is in no hurry to move along.

Angus, Love seeing pink roses in your garden. Are they they same variety as the ones you and "The Font" grew in France, and if so what rose are they?
The Life of : French name but easily bought in the UK or US:https://www.davidaustinroses.co.uk/products/therese-bugnet
So good to hear you've been in contact with the old mayor, even if the news about the villagers' voting pattern is not exactly welcome.
The Rome book is going on my reading list.
Cheers, Gail (currently in Yorkshire but heading back to Scotland tomorrow so that the postal vote form, which apparently finally landed in my letterbox yesterday, can be filled in and handed in at the polling station before 10 pm tomorrow.. )
WFT - What has gone wrong with the postal voting system !

That choral piece was gorgeous... YAM xx (who, like Gail, is scurrying back to base for tomorrow...)
If the octopus is made into a sausage, that might be worth trying.
Agree with Travel...octopus made into a sausage could be very tasty. Your garden is stunning.
I join Gail and Nobby by putting the Rome book on my list. After some internal debate, I have concluded that the British Grand Strategy book may be a tad on the (ahem) "esoteric" side for my interests. On the other hand, I am certain it would be enlightening, at least for me.
It's nice to hear a bit of news from the old village. The garden remains quite lovely even without the lupines. Best of all, Bruce and his friend by the shining sea.
Hi Stephanie! I agree with everything you wrote in your comment.
How nice to hear from the old Mayor, though AMM and the GBC will remain the same regardless of politics!
Very nice to hear some news from the old mayor. We are also living in a heavily NR area. It's obvious that there's a large segment of the population that feels no one's listening, but it's difficult to reconcile with the fact our area is very diverse and very friendly. Meanwhile, as to the US I've decided to pretend I'm an alien being just watching this very interesting situation, to avoid not being able to sleep at night. I'm sure that everyone in my family, other than me, would immediately order the octopus hot dog, so maybe they're onto something.
Hi there, Bailey Bob!
The old mayor reaching out to an old friend for comfort. Once upon a time there would be champagne.
Lisa...I do feel like an alien.
I miss those days.
