Smoked Salmon

The bars in town continue to do a roaring trade. Last night the English football team scored a last minute goal against the Netherlands in the European football championships. The many Sassenach holiday makers in town continued their celebrations into the wee hours.

This morning a group of golfers standing outside their Airbnb shout out a hearty ' Good morning ' and inform us that they've come from Houston. 'We changed plane at Heathrow and flew into Edinbro' . Having introduced themselves they ask if there's a Starbucks nearby.  We are also told that a) it's been oppressively hot in Houston and b) there's been a major power outage. 'Lucky to get out before the storm hit ' says a man who seems to be the group leader.  We leave them trying to remember who has the code to the key safe on the front door of their rental house.

A brisk wind whipping across the bay. Today, the lobster fishermen are sensibly keeping their boats in the harbour. I hope the Houstonites ( Houstonians ? ) don't suffer from hypothermia.

The 'Highland' Store has what might be best described as a full on tartan window display. There can be little doubt you're in Scotland. A meaningful percentage of visiting American golfers are purchasers of tartan trews. Many pop in for a kilt but, perhaps wisely, opt for trousers. We walk by and observe that it would be difficult to get much more tartan into a window display.

To the cheesemonger. They've started to stock John Ross smoked salmon. We take two packets. The daily delivery is just arriving. We also buy some Brie de Melun.

At the kiltmakers by the Divinity College the mannequin is back in its usual place outside the front door. I notice that the large furry sporran that attracted the  attention of the Italian tourists has been replaced by a svelter, three tassle, number. Is it my imagination or does the front of the kilt still look a wee bit rumpled after all the attention its received ?

Exactly three tourists can be found visiting the college chapel. With the students away the university end of town is exceedingly quiet although, as the video in this link shows, all is about to change: https://rscds.org/events/summer-school-2024 Brigadoon season is about to kick off.

The 'Highland' store has neglected to put a tartan jacket in its display window!
At the Inn at the Park pub quiz last night (football on the TV in the background), there was a muted reaction to the England victory - those few of us from south of the Border are used to keeping a low profile on these occasions.
Cheers, Gail!

Interesting article on the acquisition of language. Many infants are denied the opportunity to hear speech of any sort and start pre-school at a clear disadvantage to their more fortunate peers.

It has been hot here in North America, I hope they enjoy the contrast. And how typically American, talking to anyone who will listen.

Very pretty music, unfamiliar to me. Travel's comment about Americans' friendliness made me smile.

A huge hurricane just passed near Houston. I hope the families of the golfers are OK. I bet they'd like be in Scotland as well! And yes, the turquoise quilt looks rumpled to me!

I laughed aloud at the apparent replacement of the much fondled furry sporran with one theoretically less inviting. As for Americans talking to whomever might cross their path, I have a sweet memory of my dad surprising rather stoic residents of the Ile-de-la Cite in Paris with a friendly bonjour and big smile as they passed silently by.
