You just know it's going to be a good day.

The sun shines. The birds sing. The dawn chorus positively deafening. At 6:02 a farmer chugs along the lane in his ageing orange tractor. Angus and Sophie are already up and ready for a new day. The weather forecast says it will be in the high 20's today so we're out early to avoid the heat.

This morning is made memorable by the presence of two red squirrels and a black cat in the garden. The squirrels quickly scamper up an oak tree. The black cat, which has been asleep on a garden bench, is rather late in reacting to our presence. It looks at us, then leaps off the bench, races across the lawn and disappears through the laurel hedge. Sophie is oblivious to the fact that the squirrels have clambered and the car has scarpered.  She throws her head back and emits a PON howl. The audacity of it all. Five minutes are spent with the family diva in pursuit of the long gone interlopers. This might best be described as a theatrical expenditure of effort - a canine sturm und drang .

She returns to her master with a look of unbridled happiness on her face.

Sophie has guarded her flock and dispeled intruders. The girl done good - and knows it. Can there be any better way to start a Monday morning ?

And, thanks to Gogglebox,  it would seem that some members of the British public aren't 100% in agreement with government pronouncements : https://twitter.com/mikegalsworthy/status/1256898073328041984

It was actually hot yesterday.
I saw squirrels in the wooded park of the local château just once, many years ago. The park has been closed since confinement, the grass now a meter tall, and I wonder what kinds of critters have moved back in.
Great podcast about squirrels: https://99percentinvisible.org/episode/uptown-squirrel/
BTW, what's the deal with Gers and Covid-19? I saw my radiologist neighbor in line at the bakery yesterday (mask free! the nerve!) and he said there are a few cases here in Carcassonne, but not many and that they are twiddling their thumbs at the hospital. Most of the Covid patients come in for something else, not coughing or shortness of breath. Does this mean we will sidestep the worst, or that the worst is yet to come?

What a lovely smile! We had a grey squirrel on our back porch yesterday, although Cherry didn't notice. She doesn't seem to have the instinct to chase small creatures, other than toy poodles. This is a good thing for us as we keep birds who sometimes end up on the floor, and I've always attributed Cherry's good behavior around them to my sound research regarding breeds. But then I read about your adventures with Sophie and realize it could have turned out another way entirely.

Looks beautiful at your place and we love Miss Sophie's smile. The diva looks delighted.

Another best day ever? What's not to smile about - even if you miss the odd squirrel and scarpering cat!

Thank you Sophie. Gail and I were not sure if it was going to be a good day today, then we saw your smile, read about the squirrels, went out for a walk and, you know what, the sun is shining and it's turning out pretty perfect so far!
Toodle pip!
Bertie.
PS Gail notes that the British public has a better grasp of reality than the Prime Minister, and is not sure that this is a good thing....

Sophie exudes happiness. And doesn't every day with the family princess include at least a touch of drama?
