The accident.
Angus stays at home with the monosyllabic man who sprays the box hedge with natural herbicides. He charges a small fortune, travels a long way and is sparing in his conversation but his product doesn't harm the bees. It also seems to deal with the infestation of wee beasties that devour the hedging. Safe or not Sophie is kept well clear of him while he sprays.
Off en famille for a coffee and croissant. In the neighbouring village a FIAT 124 coupe. We briefly had a very old one when we first moved to London forty odd years ago. In flaming red it looked like Sophia Lauren, sounded like a Ferrari but sadly its carpets were forever saturated with the water that leaked from every window. 'The Font' looks at it and wonders aloud why they ever built vehicles with so much sharp metal on the dashboard. We can't decide what shade of green this one has been painted in.
'The Font' takes the little VW in for its annual service. Angus is called just before ten to be told that all is fine. ' I'll spend a couple of hours shopping'. Then silence. Seems that shortly after dropping the car off a young mechanic , oblivious to anyone behind him, reverses at high speed and sends 'The Font' flying. The rest seems to have been a blur. Lots of blood, people standing around, Police, Sapeur Pompiers, ' I don't need to go to hospital' - '' I'm not giving you the choice", a trip in an ambulance with sirens blaring. Three nurses waiting, blood tests, a scan, no less than four doctors. The i-Phone is out of juice. A nurse charges it up. Finally, Angus is contacted. What a day. 'The Font' returns in an ambulance - sore and with a head bandage that not even a Hollywood disaster movie could emulate. All is well. Angus wants to have words with the VW garage. ' The Font' insists it wasn't their fault. The young mechanic was sent home suffering from shock. This information does little to placate Angus but he's told all teenagers make mistakes.
That time of night when the sun pops below the horizon and for a split second everything is flooded with rose hued light. This is what it did to the cornfield on the other side of the lane. It reminded me of this picture which is so brilliantly painted:

And a happy July 4th. As anyone who has been to a little league baseball game will know this song can be unforgiving if pitched even a little too high or a little too low. Sung here as it should be. Have you ever seen such a shiny floor ? : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FHzcgdafzHw

ANGUS - I hope you realise that all of your regular loyal followers consider all the residents of the ROF - as family. My heart sank when I read
your header - ACCIDENT. And sank even more when you described of what happened with the FONT. Hoping that (truly) 'all is well' as you say.
Much love and healing thoughts to the FONT, to you of course, and to Ms. SOPHIE - who must absolutely know that something has happened.
As the saying goes........'never a dull moment.' Warm regards and good thoughts from the Westcoast of Canada.
Wish the Font get well thoughts from the other side of the world. I must say that I agree with Anonymous, I was a little concerned to see the words Accident in your blog. Regards Liz
A message to 'The Font' this morning - I'm very sorry to hear about your accident, and please, even if you think you are perfectly OK now, remember to take it easy for a while and allow Angus to spoil you a bit! A gentle cuddle with Sophie would also probably help.
Cheers, Gail.
Oh my goodness, I had the same reaction when I saw "Accident". And then, when you got us safely through the first couple paragraphs, I thought "Well, it can't be that bad," but it actually sounds kind of awful. I hope the Font feels back to rights very quickly. Her kind forgiveness of the mechanic is a lesson for us all. Also, thank you for that beautiful version of our very hard-to-sing anthem. The 4th is my favorite holiday (fireworks!) and I was feeling it had been somewhat besmirched this year. The song helped, and next year will be better!
Blimey! That was dramatic!! I must say I am impressed with the Font's magnanimity. It sounds like it totally was the young mechanic's fault, but that he will be a lot more careful in the future.
Wishing the Font a speedy recovery.
Best wishes to the Font and you. Good luck
My soul. What an experience.
I'm so glad she's alright, though a bit sore, no doubt.
Take good care of her. Sending love and good wishes.

Crikey, I'm late to this list but no less insistent in my well wishes to The Font for being fully recovered very quickly and that it all was indeed less than appeared. It makes for a shocking read! YAM xx
Best wishes for a quick recovery to The Font and all the best. Best therapy: Dog therapy. I'm sure, Sophie would make a good therapy dog. Luzia from Basel
Dear Font - we hope you get to take it easy this weekend and send Angus and Sophie out to pick up lots of delicious little cakes for you. We hope your cuts and bruises heal quickly.
When I read the heading, like everyone else, my immediate thought too was that it would be something non-human and non-Sophie related!
Wishing 'The Font' a speedy recovery - rest, being spoiled by Angus, and Sophie cuddles will work wonders we're sure!
Loved the painting and photograph of the cornfield - an interesting angle on a rural subject.
Heavens, what a terrible thing for 'the Font'! How one's life can change in a mere split second is terrifying. So pleased she's home safe and was so very well tended by the first responders and hospital alike. What a day for you all. Wishing her a speedy recovery and much PON therapy.
On my goddnrss. Wishing the Font a speedy recovery.
So sorry. Wishes of speedy recovery for the Font
So sorry to read about the calamitous VW incident. May God bless the Font with a full and quick recovery!! And, the miraculously beautiful photo, at the end of the post, is a nice juxtaposition to the day of shockingly random danger. God bless, again.
OMG! Sending best wishes for a speedy recovery to The Font.
The Fiat and the wheat are beautiful photos. I had a Fiat Spyder convertible that was very leaky. Also had to park on hills so I could pop the clutch if needed.
So sorry to hear this, what a terrifying thing to happen, the outcome could have been so much worse. The young mechanic deserves a clip round the ear at least, such a stupid thing to do. Best wishes for a quick return to normal chez vous.
Just when you think 2020 can't get much worse, (and I'm an American; sigh) we hear that our Font has had an accident.
At first I thought she just didn't want to "bother" with the hospital, but now wonder if she was wary of leaving injured plus sick. Whatever the reason, we wish the Font an easy healing process as well as the same TLC that she gave to Angus not so long ago. So nice to not scold the driver. He will scold himself longer and harder than you can. Love to all at the ROF. XXX
Although "The Font" says she's fine, she will probably be sore and a bit uncomfortable from the airborne experience. I wish her a speedy recovery and lots of pampering! Lots of red wine too.
"The Font" must have a high pain thresh hold. Glad it wasn't more serious and HOPEFULLY the young mechanic has learned something. He's lucky to have a forgiving victim in these days of lawsuits.
Oh My Goodness!! The title said "Sophie" to me, then the next photo said "car", but the reality was worse than either - and could have so easily been a hundred times worse!! I do pray for you both, as you navigate her aches and pains - of which there are sure to be plenty, and her headache which will be nasty. I'm presuming there is no concussion? Please let us know how she is.
Coming late to your news and only just catching up - very best wishes to The Font for a speedy recovery.
