More flavourful.

The heat has given way to a cold snap. 15 degrees this morning. I tell Sophie that this is good Scottish summer weather but she is fixated on a young deer that is parading unconcernedly back and forth in a field. She is tempted to give chase but even Sophie, with her unusual hunting skills, has learnt that deer are fast...too fast.

Only one topic of discussion on the radio this morning ... Afghanistan. Two points of view seem to dominate. It had to come to an end at some point and will be forgotten by the midterms or the whole thing is an unplanned disaster which will doom this incumbent.  I'm betting this isn't the media coverage the White House had hoped for.

The lady at the bakers shouts from the far end of the counter to let me know she's coming to scan my vaccine app. She also shouts out 'Bonjour Sophie ' to my shaggy companion who is waiting on the terrace. I carry out a bowl of water.

Todays croissant gets a more than solid score of 8.3/10. Sophie gets the curly crust from the top as well as two ends. Sophie is coming to the view that the crispy flap on top of the croissant is the most flavourful part .

Four of the seven moorhen chicks out for a paddle and away from their mother. They are in a good naval ' line astern' formation. As we approach they scurry into the vegetation that lines the pond but carry on clucking away.

The coverage of Afghanistan I want to hear is how we in the countries involved in the invasion and occupation are going to help those Afghanis (women and girls especially) whom we appear to have educated then abandoned. At the moment, their situation looks tragic.

Agree wholeheartedly with Gail's comments. I fear for all those females who are now educated beyond limits set by the Taliban. This, is I think, the first big political disaster of the 21st century and I feel the memory of Covid will be insignificant in the wake of reprisals in Afghanistan.
Glad that the croissant lived up to Sophie's expectations.

Am told this morning that universities such as Herat have told female students not to bother showing up for classes. Women judges barred. No wonder the British Defence Secretary was at a loss for words.

Hari Om
I echo above sentiments... it beggars belief that anyone thought this a good tactic by "us"... and it boils down now to remaining fully committed to withdrawal with resultant hell, or a reversal of decision and the resultant hell from that (as it can only mean war). I haven't dared switch to or read any news yet today. My heart aches.

Meanwhile, almost unremarked in India, there's a demagogue at work in the image of fascism... YAM xx

Perhaps this is not far from the truth: @globaltimesnews (China state-affiliated media): "From what happened in Afghanistan, those in Taiwan should perceive that once a war breaks out in the Straits, the island's defense will collapse in hours and US military won't come to help. As a result, the DPP will quickly surrender." All very troubling.

I've noticed recently that your new camera captures the fine filaments of Sophie's fur which are growing over the top of her amazing nose. Guess they eventually part and join her beard. The Afghanistan news coverage here in the States is nonstop. Can't bear to watch or listen anymore.

Sophie, I am in complete agreement with you - the curly ends and the top flap are the BEST parts of the croissant. The news out of Afghanistan is reminiscent of the US withdrawal from Saigon. However I think that we will need more than two days to do a full analysis of this current situation.

Which isn't to say that I don't totally agree with Gail's concerns. Actually those were my first thoughts on Sunday.
