Coots.

Our usual Saturday morning pandemonium. There are collar doves on the lawn which must be chased with a whoop and a holler of excitement. A large hedgehog, curled up in a ball, pricks sensitive noses and occasions howls. It is picked up and carefully placed on the other side of the fence. The little wrens have started nesting in the wisteria. Their backwards and forwards activity infuriates Sophie who shrieks. There are Coots on the village pond. Three tiny little black things follow their mother into the safety of the water lily's. Tomorrow I'll try to catch them on the i-Phone.

Upmarket Easter Eggs appear by the greengrocers check out till. Angus is finding doing without wine ( bar half a glass of Burgundy with dinner ) remarkably easy. Doing without chocolate is altogether more difficult.

The first of the local melons.

A hugely disappointing display at the bakers.

A 6.7/10 for the croissant which looks good but doesn't taste like croissant. Bob and Sophie think it's wonderful. There again Bob and Sophie remain consistent in their view that almost all human food is wonderful.

Do the bakers think the war is still on?

I could not give up chocolate for the whole of lent, although I have limited its use.

Could it be that all the locals have given up fancy cakes for Lent? That patisserie with the meringue on the top (lemon meringue?) has certainly been round the block a few times - I'm sure it was there in one of the photos you posted last week !

Angus seems to be eyeing the holiday chocolate displays with special intensity this year. Will prudence be your guide when the restraints no longer apply? (I might be tempted by a chocolate spree that would put Sophie to shame.)
Welcome back to Coppa's girl; so glad to see you back among the excellent commenters here.

Spring seems to be a busy time for Bob and Sophie! Not so much for the bakers. . .

Have never seen Coots--only heard the word in reference to old men...as in silly old coot.

When it comes to chocolate restraint isn't a word to be found in the post Lenten dictionary.

The lemon meringue pie certainly looks as if its testing the outer limits of its sell by date.

There again every season ( apart from high sumeer which is nap time ) is a busy season for the angelic duo.
