New routines.
A bright sunny start to the day. The matron of the old folks home is talking to the matron of the special needs home at the war memorial. The matron of the old folks home worked fifteen hours yesterday . As of this morning no 'unauthorized' visitors will be allowed access to the home or its residents. Although a sensible health measure the residents are less than delighted with the news they're going to be quarantined . The matron of the special needs home faces a similar problem with parents coming from all over the country to visit their offspring. Jut two unassuming neighbours navigating their lives with duty, practicality and kindness.
Down in the little market town the newsagents window has a pink rabbit costume. It would be ideal for any carnival going child who's nine feet tall and has a ten inch waist. The carnival has been cancelled as has the Friday night bingo. Sundays rugby match may have to be played without spectators although how this would be policed is anyone's guess.
Sophie and her master head off to the pharmacy. Our cleaning lady can't find sanitizing hand gel anywhere. We promise to get her some. However, it won't be from here as the owner of the pharmacy hasn't seen a bottle in ten days.
Slowly but surely our little patch of paradise shifts into new routines. Sophie is oblivious to human worries. In fact Sophie is oblivious to worries of any description. There are squirrels to chase, wrens to glare at and something tasty cooking in the kitchen. She sprints home across the daisy covered lawn. Time to get the lawn tractor out.

Sophie has a bit of a Tintin look going in that first shot - new day, new hairstyle. It is sad to hear how the virus is affecting everybody, particularly sad the kids in the special needs home won't be able to have visitors for a while. Things in the US also seem to be picking up speed now. Our son's college in Ohio is moving all classes online and most students are being asked to leave at least until April (he'll be allowed to stay). He's taking a class on the Crusades this term and says this experience is giving him insight into life during plague times. I am not sure about that, but it will no doubt be a memorable experience of some sort. I do have some good news about Cherry, who came through her surgery this morning with flying colors. Although we need to wait for the test results, her vet is very optimistic all will be well.
Oh to be Sophie with her Tintin look! Maybe she needs a fox terrier companion? Good to hear that Cherry came through the surgery without problems. Fingers and paws crossed for the test results.
What great news about Cherry. Sophie will get an extra ear chuck in celebration. She'll get a second when the news is confirmed !
Soap and water will be fine if there is no gel, it seems to be sold out everywhere. It does seems sensible to put such rules in place at the special needs and home for the elderly to protect the vulnerable people living there, although it will be hard for them to be in such isolation.
Most people are preparing to battern down the hatches here in New Zealand too. I intend to visit some friends this weekend, and as I work in a hospital (but no virus here yet), I am going to say that I won't see them until the drama dies down lest I unknowingly pass any germs on.

I was unworried about the virus until now. Not so much health-wise: Although we have one family member in delicate health due to a noncommunicable condition, the rest of us are hale and hearty and have had our regular flu shots. I'm more worried about the economy, including my economy. How will we pay the bills when we can't work? Will the government tell EDF to keep everybody's electricity on? Will it tell banks not to foreclose on mortgages? I have long hated being part of the gig economy but now it's worse.
Thanks very much to both of you. Please give Sophie an extra ear chuck from me too!

Yes, whatever happened to good old soap and water??????? The obsession with sanitiser is rather unhealthy in itself. We were advised in our clinics to use the sanititiser as an interim but to ensure soap and water followed... and nothing should be touched for at least 30 seconds after the use of the sanitiser to allow the neutralisation to take place. So when I see folk rub it (incompletely) over their hands then immediately reach out and handle stuff...yeeeeeccchhhh...
We had snow in the Edinburgh garden this morning. I am stuck here for a while as over West it has been truly wild. Again. YAM xx

Just read this excellent article... YAM xx
New routines here as well as the first cases are diagnosed in Loudoun County, with schools closed for the first time today. Many, as you know, are now working from home. Of course my job, and my husbands are both ones that cannot be done anywhere but the office. Hand sanitizer is (of course) a staple in our office, and we stocked up our supply of it when cold/flu season started to arrive. But masks are still an issue. Supply companies are not taking orders for them, or if they do, are limiting how many you can order. Companies that do have them, are not accepting orders from new customers. But as my weekend begins, I leave work all behind me, and only worry about Alf who hurt his knee when he leaped off the back porch this morning.
Almost two weeks ago we reluctantly and quietly decided to change our flight to Iceland and then Scotland from late April to next September. Frankly, we both felt a bit paranoid and overly cautious doing so. Not so much now, but still rather sad about the delay.
Relieved for PONette Cherry and Lisa. Holding good thoughts for a quick recovery. Sophie looks stunning this morning. Give her an extra tickle behind the ear from us please.
Hand sanitizer is nowhere to be found in the United States. But you can make it by combining 2/3 a cup of 99% rubbing alcohol and 1/3 cup of Aloe Vera gel. Mix them vigorously together. Will be good for six months.
Delighted to hear that Cherry has come through her surgery with flying colours. Inca and I wish her a speedy recovery and hope that all the news is good from now on. Big hugs from us here in warm and sunny Spain.
Thank you for the good news about Cherry! Please keep us posted on her healing progress.
Hurray for Cherry!
Only 3 packages of paper towels in the paper product aisle this morning. As a man stood thinking, I took one, he the other two, but one was taken off him at checkout. LOL! The world is nuts at the moment.
