Gratefully received.

The boys in blue up early. At day break a flight of three jets hurtles at tree top level across the village. An unwelcome sign of the times. The noise is so loud it seems to wrap itself around you. Sophie who can bark if she hears a pin drop seems unperturbed.

A walk along the old Roman road before heading off to visit the bakers in the small market town. The last time we were there was to pick up a Buche de Noel for Christmas. After two months of pandemic induced caution life is reverting, quickly, back to normal.

We would stop off at the cafe under the arcades for a coffee and croissant but the new Vietnamese owners are not dog lovers. In fact they have banned dogs from the premises. Sophie looks down towards the cafe longingly. The early morning beer and absinthe crowd are too busy imbibing to notice her.

The bakers wife says this is a quiet time for them. They make 35% of their money over Christmas and another 20% on Valentines Day. Easter, surprisingly, is not a big thing. You can tell it's low season. There is a decided lack of choice.

This morning we opt for an Opera. Sophie gets some choux pastry which is gratefully received.

Sometimes it's frustrating when you can't explain things to your dog. Our situation is not nearly as serious as Sophie's with the now-unfriendly cafe, but Charlie has a very hard time understanding why his favorite sweets shop is not always open and waiting for him. The owner is a dog-lover and spoils him with beef jerky bits when he visits. Charlie has experienced grave disappointment on a couple of occasions when we have forgotten they are closed on Tuesday. We have lots Joro spiders in the fall in Japan. They are rather spectacular although you learn to be mindful of the webs.

How sad that the owners of the café in the small market town have banned dogs - obviously they haven't met Sophie! So it's back to the drive-in bakers or the shopping centre for your croissants? There doesn't seem to be much choice today, although I rather fancy one of those strawberry or raspberry tarts.
Torrential rain here and it looks as though it's set in for the day. I cleaned the car on Wednesday, to rid it of the sticky pollen that's everywhere. Rather a waste of time and effort!

A café in a rural French town bans dogs? One has to question how well the new owners know their clientele...
The selection at the bakers may be limited, but the Opera looks entirely acceptable.

I'd always fancy an eclair or strawberry tart. It is a shame that Sophie can't be welcomed back at the cafe.

Reading this triggered a memory, we took the Eurostar from London to Lille, and spent the afternoon exploring, we went into a cafe, and there was this adorable little dog wandering around, stopping to visit with regulars, then retreating behind the counter with the owner. The owner noticed me trying to take a picture, and brought the dog over with a great smile on both faces held her so I could get a great photo. Dogs in cafes are a part of French life, a beautiful part.

I’m curious about the perfect piping on most pastries compared to the toddleresque printing on the Opera and Caroline cakes — next generation in training? Was there anything else different about this opera cake compared to prior ones here?

I'm delighted to learn that, due to our very extreme winters and sub zero temps, the Juro spider will need to stay more comfortably to the south of New Hampshire. Sophie being denied entry into that cafe seems silly of them and I suspect an unwise decision on their part.
