No trip to the bakers for us today. After our morning walk down to the, by now, arid stream bed we return to The Rickety Old Farmhouse to discover the gardeners are here en masse. It would have been nice of them to let us know they were coming..
Four of the gardeners trim the cypress trees which continue to add a foot of height a year. We lost some of them in the strong Spring gales, so a haircut ahead of the winter storms is a good idea. Another team of gardeners start work on trimming the laurel hedge that runs for a hundred metres or so along the lane.
Sophie manages to get a quick second walk while the gardeners stop for a cup of coffee. Sophie is not greatly enamoured with a garden that echoes to the sound of half a dozen chain saws. She and her master head off to the calm of the Holy Well. On our walk we discuss the Supreme Court. Who would believe 2020 could hold any more surprises ?
No biscuits and no curly croissant ends today? Please reassure Bertie that the family diva is not starving to death. A matter he considers of much greater import than the US Supreme Court.
It is the end of the world.
A sad day. A truly epochal; woman. You have to have the feeling that Janice Rogers Brown, Joan Larsen, and Amy Coney Barrett are on DJT's short list .
RIP RBG... (and maybe the Supreme Court?) 2020 has a way to run yet... YAM xx
Yes another curve ball in 2020.
Inspiring, a heroine, a champion of equal rights, a facile writer, an incredible individual. Just when you think nothing worse can happen. The door is open, and I expect all hell to break loose.
2020 has sure been filled with the unexpected.
I think you hit the nail on the head.
I think we can all feel confident that RBG tried her very best to live out the year, but if she had to leave, it seems fitting that she died on Rosh Hashanah. I feel a bit better about things this morning after reading an article in the New Yorker that talks about what a Democratic Senate might be able to do if the Republicans succeed in seating a new justice - statehood for DC and Puerto Rico perhaps?
I read somewhere that if the current President of the USA's polls continued to trail the Joe B's poll results that the GOP would stop supporting him and concentrate upon wining the Senate. The GOP were willing to sacrifice the presidency for control on the upper house. So far I have not seen any indication of this happening.
