May Day.

Good morning from Sophie who has come face to face with two deer asleep in the field outside the courtyard fence. The deer clearly weren't expecting to be disturbed this early in the morning. They leap to their feet and move like wraiths into the morning sea mist. Sophie gives chase for 50 yards or so then thinks better of it. She gives me a look that makes it quite clear she could have caught them if only they hadn't had such a commanding lead.

We return home through the heather which is already alive with big fat happy bees. Who ever knew bees adore heather ?

This is the morning of the May Dip. A time when the students get up before dawn and go swimming in the North Sea. Some folks claim that this is a tradition that goes back to the middle ages when pilgrims used to wash themselves on the shore  after their long journeys. Angus thinks it more likely that students have always been on the lookout for a good reason to have a party. There was a time when skinny dipping was a thing but this is now seen as macro-aggressive behaviour. Angus quietly wonders whether anyone skinny dipping in the North Sea needs a medal or counselling. The cafes and restaurants are already overflowing with revelers trying to deal with latent hypothermia over a plate of  bacon and eggs. The streets echo with happy laughter. ' The Font ' thinks swimming en masse in the North Sea at five thirty in the morning is the sort of thing a cult might do.

We leave the students enjoying themselves and head to our usual stomping ground. This morning Sophie greets the deaf Pit Bull which, despite its looks,  is as gentle as a mouse. The poor thing was about to be put down but was rescued at the last minute by a South African professor and his wife. The dog seems to have settled into its new life with an aura of relaxed ' there but for the grace of God' gratitude. Sophie has befriended the Pit Bull but draws the line at its enthusiasm for standing in the sea. The family diva ignores a Jack Russell that shows up to join in the fun.

So starts a new month with a Polish Lowland Sheepdog lady who finds that each day just keeps on getting better and better.

Last night the remaining students went through this old pre May morning tradition. Another excuse for a party ?  :https://www.facebook.com/uniofsta/videos/uosta-gaudie-2019-from-the-air-bmmp4/164820914840811/

I love the photo of Sophie on the beach, respectfully greeting her pit bull friend. A terrier rushing over to join in the fun? That could be Nobby!

If the temps are as Baltic as they are over here by the Hutch this morning, anyone thinking of dipping should definitely consider a second skin! YAM xx

Dancing a ring-around in glee
From furrow to furrow, while overhead
The foam flies up to be garlanded,
In silvery arches spanning the air..."

Thank you for taking us along for your May Day morning walk.

Sophie has made such nice doggie friends on her walks.
I'm currently looking for another dog, now that my lovely Indy has gone to the Rainbow Bridge. The rescue places are full of Staffies, some called Amstaffs, and on occasions openly acknowledged as Pit Bulls. They all seem such pleasant dogs, desperate to be given a comfortable home and love. Here they have to be muzzled, and licensed as aggressive breeds with a long list of restrictions to their movements. If I chose to have one I would be interviewed by the police, the house and garden inspected to make sure I could provide adequate security - and a file opened on me as a keeper of a dangerous animal. I spoke to one of the dog walkers at a rescue I visited, and he said their dogs were no threat and gentle creatures.

Good morning, Sophie and a happy May Day to all. Sophie seems to have made many friends among the dogs at the shore. I don't recall her being quite as sociable with fellow canines in France. A mellowing phase for Sophie?

Thank you for the Joyce. How perfect for today!

I'm so very sorry to learn that dear Indy has crossed the bridge. I'm glad for the happy days you shared but they were much too brief. Wishing you all the best in finding a new companion.

Coppa G - That sounds like a mountain of paper work and then there will be the insurance. Perhaps a rescue golden ?

So sorry to hear of Indy. You were so kind to give an old lady a comfortable home during her final months. Otto and Osa are sending 'good vibes' to you on locating another companion.

This reader imagines that Angus took a few May 1st dips during his days as a student!

With that comical egg-shaped head, Sophie's new friend is a bull terrier, made famous by a New Yorker cartoonist George Booth.

Jake of F - Thank you. I wouldn't want to get on the wrong side of one of these. To start with we were quite nervous but neither Sophie nor the Bull Terrier have been anythoing other than angels.

They are strong and can be 'bull-headed" (yes the pun), but sweet. Our next door neighbor had one who was a 24/7 tennis ball addict.

Bees + heather = heather honey. If you're travelling in Scotland this summer you'll maybe notice hives set among the heather in the hills.
